The Elders website, not some flaky astrology article

Never before has such a powerful group of leaders come together . Free from political, economic or military pressures. The only agenda of The Elders is that of humanity. And their only purpose is to ease human suffering in three essential areas:

1. Offering a catalyst for the peaceful resolution of conflict.

2. Seeking new approaches to seemingly intractable global issues.

3. Sharing wisdom: reaching out to grassroots Elders and to the next generation of leaders. Listening and helping to amplify voices for good all over the world.

I'm not sure what you find objectionable about this mission. It seems pretty pie in the sky, but overall it is a laudable goal. Why anti-Semetic and anti-American? You are projecting something that isn't there.

I'm guessing the reason has something to do with the specific list of invidividuals that comprise "the Elders". All of them have known positions on various issues, and some of these may be seen by some groups as anti-Semitic and/or anti-American to some extent.

Anyway, a statement of goals is irrelevant compared to the actual actions of an organization.

4 Nobel Peace Prize winners, 4 democratically elected former Presidents/Prime Ministers, and people who have worked their entire lives to bring positive change to the needy or oppressed. I've never heard of some of these people, but their biographies are impressive (yes, I know they are written to be impressive, and their mistakes or failures aren't included, but what they have accomplished can't be discounted). Of course, they will have their own agendas, everyone does, but I don't see what harm can come from giving them a platform to try to make things better. You are right, the statement of goals is only as good as the actions that flow from it, but they have just organized, so it is premature to judge their actions or assume their direction.

One thing that is missing from the list is someone from a Latin American background. The group is overrepresented from Africa, with some Europeans, Asians, and Americans.

That's the list I got off of the link provided in the initiating post. First of all, I would like to congratulate the list of usual suspects who distilled this down to an "all about Israel" thread. This must be a record for you lot. You managed to get the thread twisted before the first page was halfway done.

Nelson Mandela. Well obviously just does not love Israel enough. Tutu? How could he not be spending his time thing loving thoughts of Israel? Jimmy Carter? Who's he? Did he used to work for George Bush? I don't remember him... Kofi Annan. Well we all hate the UN, so we gotta hate Koffi, right? Of course, if Koffi were to call you up and ask, "Who would you like to talk to today?", you'd decline.

Mary Robinson. Oh wait. We smell a trap here. Somebody who knows something about ethnic conflict resolution. Oh no! We are on the slippery slope. Jeez, if only Jeb Bush was looking for a job right now...

Well, their goals are honourable, but I don't see Jimmy Carter solving Iraq's problems in a hurry, or Mary Robinson helping Israel/Palestine, not the unbiased crowd they would like to be seen as.
