ScottSA Posted June 20, 2007 Report Posted June 20, 2007 Old article, but this really strikes home lol... Banning flag desecration flatters the desecrators and suggests that the flag of this great republic is a wee delicate bloom that has to be protected. It’s not. It gets burned because it’s strong. I’m a Canadian and one day, during the Kosovo war, I switched on the TV and there were some fellows jumping up and down in Belgrade burning the Stars and Stripes and the Union Jack. Big deal, seen it a million times. But then to my astonishment some of those excitable Serbs produced a Maple Leaf from somewhere and started torching that. Don’t ask me why – we had a small contribution to the Kosovo bombing campaign but evidently it was enough to arouse the ire of Slobo’s boys. I’ve never been so proud to be Canadian in years. I turned the sound up to see if they were yelling “Death to the Little Satan!”, but you can’t have everything. http://www.steynonline.com/content/view/332/ Quote

betsy Posted June 20, 2007 Report Posted June 20, 2007 It's funny how some people express their pride. Both Drea and Peter imagine Canadians - and therefore themselves - as superior to the Americans. That in itself is funny enough. But to make it funnier, they attack the best ally we have - the one who will protect their freedom when our own country fails to do so - and at the same time, with a bravado they find repulsive in Americans, they pretend not to care about our lunatic enemies' feelings about us. Would he have pissed himself with glee if it was the Belgian flag being burnt before the Canadian? No. Such patriotism simply shows a total lack of patriotism. Nuthin Anti-American about it. No. I guess it is about what the American flag stands for - that's what gives Steyn this "fuzzies". I definitely wouldn't have any warm fuzzies if our flag was torched following the flag of Zimbabwe or Cuba or Iran. I wouldn't even feel any fuzzies - in fact I'd be a little bit worried - if ours followed the torching of France's (knowing the nudge-nudge-wink-wink among other allies during WW2). Relating this to everyday life....I wonder who among you would have the "fuzzies" if your "taste" and lifestyle was compared to that of trailer-park trash instead of, let's say....Jackie O? Such patriotism simply shows a total lack of patriotism. Huh? What does THAT mean? Quote

kuzadd Posted June 26, 2007 Report Posted June 26, 2007 more persecution complex? Quote Insults are the ammunition of the unintelligent - do not use them. It is okay to criticize a policy, decision, action or comment. Such criticism is part of healthy debate. It is not okay to criticize a person's character or directly insult them, regardless of their position or actions. Derogatory terms such as "loser", "idiot", etc are not permitted unless the context clearly implies that it is not serious. Rule of thumb: Play the ball, not the person (i.e. tackle the argument, not the person making it).

Are you so far dragged into nihilism that you don't even understand the concept of national pride? I understand national pride. National pride is an emotion. There is nothing rational about it - it is pure emotion. I got over it during my stint in the navy. So yes, you're going to have to explain Steyn's re-action to me because Steyn's story makes no rational sense: Some angry folks burn a canadian flag. Steyn gets choked up. Why? because the angry folks are treating the Canadian flag like the American flag. Steyn's tears flow because finally Canada is equated with the USofA. Steyn feels national pride in Canada at that moment because Canada has become (to the folks who burn flags) America. A kind of American Mini-me. Do you find Steyn's experience understandable? If so perhaps you could explain your emotional reaction to the flag burning. Once upon a time...I was on a frieghter heading across to Europe. I tuned into Radio Belgium. The announcer was reading the news and reported the results of Canada's election as a headline. I, like Steyn got choked and tears welled up in my eyes. That is National Pride. and just as ridiculous. Quote A bayonet is a tool with a worker at both ends
