Shame on the Left and its vicious hatred of Israeland shame on those who give ideological comfort to these enemies of democracy, so-called socialists and islamofascists.. Didn't Martin Luther kIng Jr. argue that anti-Zionism is simply a mask for anti-Semitism.

An anti-Israeli rally in Iran - increasing numbers of the British left are joining them in their hate

excerpted

ANTI-RACISM is supposed to be one of the guiding principles of our society, preventing discrimination on the grounds of ethnic origin or nationality. Yet it is a bizarre paradox of modern Britain that there is now a climate of increasing hostility towards Jews, particularly in those Left-wing intellectual circles which otherwise make a fetish of their concern for racial sensitivities.

Dressed up as criticism of the state of Israel, anti-Semitism is becoming not just tolerated but even fashionable in some of our civic institutions, including the universities and parts of the media.

Thanks to the Left’s neurotic hatred of Israel, we now have the extraordinary sight of self-styled liberal campaigners launching McCarthyite witch-hunts against anyone deemed to have Israeli connections, as in this week’s debate at the University and College Union’s annual conference at Bourne mouth calling for a boycott of all Israeli academic institutions.

another excerpt=========================

They are guilty of the most bizarre double standards.

While they scream about the Jewish state, they remain silent about human rights abuses carried out by brutal regimes across the world.

And it is ironic that, on the day the lecturers debated a boycott of Israel, they also voted to refuse to co-operate with any attempt to crack down on radical Islam on campuses, claiming such a move would be an infringement of free speech.

Given some of the lecturers’ enthusiasm for silencing Israeli opinion such a position is laughable in its hypocrisy.

United by anti-Semitism, the bigots of the academic Left and Muslim fundamentalism are destroying freedom of thought in this country.

So read the rest of it I can't post the whole thing it is in response to a boycott of Israel in Britain (and elsewhere)

excerpt: ANTI-RACISM is supposed to be one of the guiding principles of our society, preventing discrimination on the grounds of ethnic origin or nationality. Yet it is a bizarre paradox of modern Britain that there is now a climate of increasing hostility towards Jews, particularly in those Left-wing intellectual circles which otherwise make a fetish of their concern for racial sensitivities.

I would assume that these British 'anti-Zionist' academics are choosing their positiong because they choose to side with the Palestinians thinking they are simply downtrodden human beings who commit no evil or violence themselves. So, for the sake of argument, let us further assume that these saintly academics, are correct. That, rather than being a liberal democracy forced into militancy in order to defend themselves from murderous terrorists, Israel is instead anl oppressive occupying power.

So, we should be asking whether Prof. Wilkie and his colleagues have applied the same standards to other countries. Have they denied places in their laboratories to Saudi students whose religious police force young female High School students back into burning buildings rather than allow them to run out into the street without the hijab? Or has this University turned away any Saudi princes because their brutal government punishes any criticism of the House of Saud with imprisonment and death?

Has Prof. Wilkie rejected Chinese student applicants over the Brutal oppression of Tibet, the slaughter at Tiananmen Square, or the outright suppression of all organized religion?

Has Prof. Wilkie denied Kuwaiti students entry into his lab over their 1991 expulsion of over 350,000 Palestinians who they regarded as enemies of the State (something Israel has never even contemplated)?

Have Jordanian students been kicked out of Oxford over King Hussein's war against the PLO in the early 1970's that left tens of thousands of Palestinians dead? I don't think so.

No, it seems that Prof. Wilkie and his ilk - have a problem solely with Israel and noone else.

Maybe he's not an anti-semite maybe he's just an uninformed ignoramus a stupid man who speaks before he thinks (he is now apologizing to all who will listen that he didn't mean what he said).

Is Prof. Wilkie, who asserts that Palestinians only "wish to live in their own country," aware that for nearly a century they have repeatedly rejected a state of their own if it meant Israel's continued existence?

There is nothing in these excerpts that shows criticism of Israel to be driven by anti-semitism. The suggestion seems quite slanderous, really.

Yes, I concur. Why is it that some have to over exaggerate and broad brush it exposes their atempt to foster hate of the "left".

Whatever, the 'left' is supposed to mean. It seems they only see bland and white no shades of grey.

Jewish voices around the world have stated that Zionists do not have the right to utilize their voice because they disagree with their actions against Palestine, plus other things.

Now, this boycott of Israeli academia was launched by the South African Trade unionists because of a request from the Paleastinian trade unionists. What is behind it is the aparthide that is being committed.

I see little difference in your opinions, bland and no shades of grey anywhere - as in the U.S. being a theocratic fascist state hmmmm quite slanderous really.

This is a boycot launched by the British academia, not S.A. but against what apartheid? S.A. is no longer an apartheid country right? The anti semitism is apparant because they don't apply the same standards to other countries only Israel.

If you are referring to Israel which you cannot be, because Israel is no apartheid State, the Arab minority are full citizens with voting rights and representation in the government. Under apartheid black South Africans could not vote and were not citizens of the country in which they are the overwhelming majority of the population. Unless you are referring to Canada's apartheid reservation system.

Insults are the ammunition of the unintelligent - do not use them. It is okay to criticize a policy, decision, action or comment. Such criticism is part of healthy debate. It is not okay to criticize a person's character or directly insult them, regardless of their position or actions. Derogatory terms such as "loser", "idiot", etc are not permitted unless the context clearly implies that it is not serious. Rule of thumb: Play the ball, not the person (i.e. tackle the argument, not the person making it).

It's a rant more than anything.

You see, no action is to ever be taken against Israel's actions in the occupied territories. Whether it be peaceful - such as both the academic boycott and the trade unions' boycotts, the peaceful demonstrations which occur weekly in B'Lin or any other kind of non violent protest. It is all anti-semitism! Nothing to do with the illegal settlements, land confiscations, bulldozing houses, targetting civilians, the radical right settlers, the Wall... nope - it's all just plain old anti-semitism and of course all Israelis and Jews are innocent victims as always.

Explaining her support for the NUJ’s stance, Ms Hardyment described Israel as “a wonderful Nazi-like killing machine backed by the world’s richest Jews”.

Then, like some lunatic from the far-Right, she referred to the “so-called Holocaust” before concluding: “Shame on all Jews, may your lives be cursed.”

Typical of this approach was the opinion of Ulster poet and darling of the BBC Tom Paulin, who once argued that “Jewish settlers in Israel should be shot dead. They are Nazis, racists. I feel nothing but hatred for them.”
The boycott is now so widespread that, in one grotesque incident, an Israeli PhD student had his application for Oxford initially rejected purely because he had served in his country’s army.

The professor dealing with the case, Andrew Wilkie, said he had “a huge problem with Israelis taking the moral high ground from their appalling treatment in the Holocaust and then inflicting gross human rights abuses on Palestinians”.

"While they scream about the Jewish state, they remain silent about human rights abuses carried out by brutal regimes across the world."

The point is each day in Sudan, Mauritania, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Egypt, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Somalia, Syria, Lebanon, and Algeria to name but a few Muslim countries, human slavery is engaged in and thousands of Muslims are arrested and tortured for having the wrong political views or for being feminist, gay, communist, involved in labour unions or heaven forbid should be Christians, Bahaiis, or someone not of the right Muslim sect.

The same trendy leftists who support these regimes suspend their value system and simply pretend these countries are not oppressing and violating the human rights of all the above people.

There is nothing more absurd then seeing communist and socialists marching hand in hand with the same anti-Zionists who would kill, torture or imprison them as fast as they would Jews if they had a chance.

It is for me the utmost in absurdity to see these leftists, particularily feminist and gay leftists marching arm in arm with people that despise them as much as they do Jews and Israelis and Christians and Bahaiis and Hindus.

I do not take the trendy left seriously precisely for the above reason.

When I criticize Israel I use the exact same framework to criticize Palestinians, Muslim countries, European countries, anyone else.

In the trendy left wing world there are good guys and bad guys. So for example, they are selective in not criticizing China's human rights autrocities and support of Sudan, but they are quick to describe the US and Israel as evil.

Your point is well taken and many of us are as fed up with this double standard as you are. I am a pretty middle of the road liberal moderate and I detest it when trendy leftists try label me as a conservative neo con because I believe Israel should have the right to exist and I want Palestinians and Israelis treated equally.

No I will not be trendy leftist and look the other way on China, Russia, Iran, Indonesia, Sudan or any other country violating human rights whether it be Israel or anyone else.

Quite frankly I find the alleged neo-cons at least more honest and up front about their beliefs. They do not couch them in politically correct words.

As a modeate middle of the roader I have no time of day for anyone who is selective in who they try portray as evil.

It is particularily why I have a huge credibility problem with the UN right now whose Human Rights committee is stacked with human rights violating nations.

I don't know, first of all, Darfur gets as much attention as Israel amongst the "lefties" so it's definitely not about loving Muslims or anything.

If you'll notice, the common denominator between Darfur and Israel is not an oppressive ruling party like Iran or China (something which goes on unfortunately in far too many places in the world for us to stick our noses in every one of the situations), but rather an oppression by a ruling party against an ethnic community. Dictators thrive on greed whereas ethnic clashes are based racism and the manifestation is a powerful ruling party against another ethnic community (whether it's Darfur or Israel).

Furthermore, I don't see China or Iran pretending to be a democratic state who just happen to practice random acts of human rights abuses, they are quite open about handling their affairs differently than we do. So the hypocritical moral high-ground doesn't help the situation either.

It's kind of the worst thing that any humans could be doing at this time in human history. Other than that, it's fine." Bill Nye on Alberta Oil Sands

True, M.Dancer is only one among several abusers who, are unable to make rational arguments and are disinclined to behave decently, and who substitute those with insults and lies.

The list of these folks has gotten quite long -- to the point that I am questioning the value of sticking around the forum. I don't see why honest participants here for sensible discussions should have to put up with unremitting slanders and abuse.

Maybe this forum is dying.

I think the left sides with Palestine because of several reasons.

Generally:

People of the left go for the 'underdog'. In this instance they mistakenly think that the Palestinians are the underdogs when it's really the Israeli's.

Also, depending in how far left you go, the poorer some appears to be the more righteous they are in their eyes and the opposite goes for the rich. This is driven my projection in my opinion. At home here they are jealous of someone who seemingly has more than them and when they apply that at an international level they see the Israeli's as the Rich white guy up the road who runs the Tim Horton's franchise in the neighbourhood and the Palestinians as the homeless beggers downtown. Their hatred for the rich man turns into a hatred fro the Israeli.

It''s why those of the FAR left are fanatically against Jews and Israel. Look at Svend when he was over there. LOL.

It starts to get sick when it goes to a level of holocaust denial and minimalization and historical revisionism.

coles notes: They hate because of the jealousy they feel inside of themselves.

The blatent misrepresentation and skewing of truth really ranks as number. The Iraelis are not the underdogs, and there is absolutely no way anyone should be able to presume they were. Unfortunately, we are seeing an example of the truly self deluded.
