There's an article on the Shah in Wikipedia as well. Just search for "Shah of Iran". Dismission of Mussadeh and subsequent authoritarian rule of the Shah resulted in well known abuses of rights in the country.

But what do you know? How do you think he came to be the Shah of Iran?

Anyways.. carry on DOP - your gate needs guarding.

Another strange one... What's with you guys today?

Old enemies.

So, I have to assume at this point you don't know how the Shah of Iran came to be monarch and under what circumstance...wiki I'm sure would have it.

It wasn't in 1953 and oil was merely part of the reason...though indeed an important factor. It was more to do with the politics of his father and the folks he was entertaining at the Palace.

Man DOP, that was pretty lame - you had to play the Holocaust card cuz ya had nothing else to say!

LOL how little you change - or learn.

We are talking here about funding of covert operations within foreign countries - specifically Iran. I believe the subject matter has to with the overthrow of their democratically elected president Mossadeq in 1953 by covert actions under both British, US and Saudi rule.

But of course, let's not stay on topic - it's much easier to smear others!!

Dear DOP,

I admin that the wording of my earlier statement was not exactly correct. Shah was not installed by a CIA coup. Rather, a popular Prime Minister of Iran, Mohammed Mossadeh, was removed by a CIA coup, which marked the beginning of authoritarian rein by the Shah, which resulted in numerous abuses of rights.

So, the argument that this example was intended to substantiate, still holds: the politics of interference, direct or indirect, create much anguish and suffering in the affected regions. They also result in building up of hatred and tension. On occasion, these will spill out and blow back to the originator of these policies.

If it's you or them, the truth is equidistant

An epidemics [sic] of what? The only epidemics I see are conspiracy nuts.

Of an inexplicable mental weakness? That strikes when one attemps to logically defend something that relies on sole and improvable in principle axiom: "because I can".

The Shah became monarch in 1941. This was due to his father courting Nazis. Worried that Iran was going to join the Axis and give Nazi Germany all the oil it needed to run its massive military, Stalin and Churchill occupied Iran. It should be noted that this happened during Operation Barbarossa...the Invasion of Russia. The Shah took his father's place at this point. Iran went on to be an important factor in the destruction of the German armies in Russia by becoming the main southern conduit for the Allied Lend-Lease program. Eventually the Americans, once they entered the war, conducted massive engineering projects to build large airports and a modern north-south highway. Iran enjoys these fruits of war to this day.

Iraq was facing a similar Nazi threat in the form of facist movement supported by the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem...Arafat's uncle.

As for Mohammed Mossadegh...he had close ties to the pro-Soviet Communist Tudeh Party. During the height of the Cold War, nationalization of the British built and operated oil industry in Iran then cozying-up to Communists was a formula for disaster. For what it's worth, Madeleine Albright apologized for the CIA's involvement in getting rid of this man. By the time they did get rid of him, his popularity was slipping anyways. Mainly due to his reforms not working and his anti-Western stance causing much hardship in terms of sanctions. Even the Communists abandoned him.

He enjoyed a posthumous surge in popularity post-1979 during the Islamic Revolution as a poster-boy for stirring up anti-Western sentiment in Iran amoungst the general population who still admired him. The clerics were less impressed as he was a staunch secularist...but they saw his corpse's usefulness.
