So the Cons turfed popular outspoken MP Garth Turner. This from a party that prides itself on free votes and individual opinions. It seems to me that the Conservative party may really be controlled from the top down. I get the feeling they prefer lap dogs to yap dogs. Is there really any difference between red and blue? Maybe it's time to try Green.

I really hope this decision comes back to bite them in the ass.

This piece of information has absolutely astonished me. Who woulda thunk it? Imagine that. I'm sure Turner is just as shocked as the rest of us.

BTW, I think the Ontario Tory caucus decided this unilaterally in a unanimous vote. Have they gone rogue? Has Harper lost control?

Curious minds want to know.

I could have sworn I posted this topic as the last tory kicked out of caucas.......

Giving away company secrets, lack of discretion etc. etc. would get you bumped from any board room, he should have known better.

The problem with that excuse is that Garth isn't privy to the company secrets. His bench is as far back as possible. I think it's out in the hall somewhere.

As an avid reader of his blog I am aware the he speculates on his party's decisions and lobbies them adopt ideas that he and his constituents feel are important but that's about it.

Currently he was aggressively pushing for income splitting…first for the retired and then for all of us.

Exactly, I find it hard to believe that Harper wasn't aware of an MP being turfed in advance of it happening, especially in a minority government situation.

Perfect! Exactly as expected ... infighting will be the death of this government.

They're tories, after all -- they just can't help themselves.

Actually, Turner is a Tory....Mackay was a Tory....the rest of them are CCRAPers who conned Canada into thinking they were the party of McDonald...and the Chief.......neo cons.....social cons.....they are far removed from Canada as possible

People in the riding being interviewed by different networks have said people are furious in the riding.

I thought Harper said his MPs would have a voice.

The Ontario caucus voted on it, later on the National caucus also voted on it. Maybe they should have given him the Minister of Silly Walks position, keep him happy. I think its all sour grapes cos he was passed over for a ministership.

There needs to be discipline in the caucus, and one doesn't bad mouth the PM and the party continually, and expect to get away with it.

I was shocked but thought it would come when Turner went up against Harper early in the new government. This also reminds me of what happen to Bush's first Treasurer O'Neill, when the people around Bush decided he should go, when he didn't believe in the foreign policies on Iraq. and othr monetary polices. So next question is.... what is the Alliance/Cons hiding and don't want us to know????

Never followed politics in Canada, eh?

Uhm, everyone?

Turner was a loud-mouth and a loose cannon who would have been booted out on his arse long ago were it not for the Tories minority position. He's like that smart guy who talks down to everyone, the smart guy who knows about one or two things, ie economics, but never learned any social skills. He was an irritant and nobody in caucus liked him or wanted him there. The Ontario caucus finally had enough of him and voted him out unanimously, and the national caucus was delighted to back them up - unanimously. If this doesn't show you just how popular he was with the party then there's not much hope for you.

There was zero chance Harper would have signed his nomination papers for another run anyway.

And yet Harper said he would let him MPs be themselves.

Turner remains popular in his riding.

Popular? Yes, among Liberals.

This from a party that prides itself on free votes and individual opinions.

Free votes and individual opinions does not mean you get away with publicly and repeatedly going against the party and the leader on major issues of policy. It means you speak your piece in caucus and let them know you're opposed to something. It does not mean you go on the talk show circuit and delight them by spewing nastiness towards Harper and his government. I used to read Turner's columns, but I wanted his ass booted out shortly after the Tories got into power. Once he realized he wasn't getting a cabinet position he became sulky and resentful and has been nothing but a liability since then.

It seems to me that the Conservative party may really be controlled from the top down. I get the feeling they prefer lap dogs to yap dogs.

As opposed to the NDP types who get to stand up when Layton tells them and vote exactly how he decides on every issue, or the Liberals who don't even dare voice an opposing opinion in caucus?

They're all tories now, which keeps things from being complicated. Like Thomas Paine once said "every tory is a coward".

Sometimes reading leftists like these two I get the impression their tongues loll over their lower lips and they bay at the moon.

Rabid hate is so much a part of the Left these days it's a wonder democracy even survives. Fortunately, few take them seriously.

In his own riding. I don't know that the Liberals would have beat him this election.

Just goes to show what a pain in the butt Garth is.

Also shows how much stronger a leader Harper is than Mr. Dithers was. Anybody remember Carolyn Bennett?

Something tells me a spring election is definitely in the offing.

Dion is a verbose, mild-mannered academic with a shaky grasp of English who seems unfit to chair a university department, much less lead a country.

Yep. Lotsa hate these days.

Hein?

*Yawn* This is a non-story. Turner is going to sit somewhere in the back beside Andre Arthur and the two of them will generally vote with the government. Maybe Turner will show Arthur how to set up an account on blogspot.com.

So let me get this straight about 36% of Canadian's are far removed from Canada because they disagree with the Liberals.

It's too bad for Garth, but good for Liberals.

It's further proof to everyone - supporters and otherwise - that the Harper "Administration" (as Garth apparently called it!) wants only party robots.

This story has legs, methinks.

No offense but isn't that pretty high and mighty coming from a guy who supports the Liberals whose backbench MP's were merely party robots. As far as I can tell the reason he was kicked out wasn't because of his political leaning, but leaking confidential info which will get you in trouble with any political party.
