I am not Jewish. But I don't think that modern Jews quite understand the plight of Jews in the past, and refugees (Somalis, Haitians) in the present.

Billy Wilder and John von Neumann were Jews born in a multicultural state.

In 1914, Austria-Hungary (and Europe) imploded.

Judaism is a religion.

Israel is a modern  country - it wouldn't allow modern jews to not understand ........ from a young age.

The Jewish travails, throughout history right up until today, make the Nation  worthy of great respect.

In the 1930s, Israel did not exist.

At the time, Jews had nowhere to go.

Nowadays, Somalis and Haitians have a country, a place.

They at least have a passport.

For me, a Canadian, an Israeli passport means something.

This person can go to Israel: a rich organised country.

=====

At present, a Somali or Haitian passport means little, nothing.

True, the holder has a place to go in this world. (But this person is poor. And the document is likely fake.)

Most European Jews resided in eastern Europewith about 1/2 million Jews living in Poland and the Soviet Union. Before the Nazi takeover of power i1933, Europe had dynamic and highly developed Jewish culture

To paraphrase, they were citizens of those countries.

With the end of the World war in 1945, the globe set forward a new order that included:

Decolonization

Establishment of the UN

Foundations of Cold War

Absolute American hegemony

It was completely understandable that the world would establish new norms, including humanistic edicts against genocide, bombing of civilians and so forth. The way forward was clear, and optimistic.

Some of that included establishment of the first modern Jewish State in a tiny area, historically close to Israel, That had been under British control.  Given position of Judaism in the pantheon of world religions, And what they had gone through... It made sense.

The challenges and problems we are dealing with today arise from the progress of those decisions 80 some years ago.

Looks like someone has a new patronizing catch phrase !

I believe the 'problems' began immediately following WWI?

The carving up of Empires and rise of Nationalism gave rise to cultural clash?

If I could point to one event that drastically changed the World Order, post WWII,  it would be the development and the demonstration of nuclear weapons - the specie, suddenly, was faced with a weapon that could lead to our extinction - scared folks?

.............. and then along came the fusion bomb - needs a fk'n fission weapon as a squib - open ended.

The World realized that ANY conflict could lead to MAD.

Geo conquest became more complicated with the introduction of crowd pleasers.

What is your point?

On May 11, 1949nearly year to the day after Israel’s creation, the United Nations General Assembly confirmed Resolution 273, which approved Israel’s application for membership (Nationhood) , making Israel the 59th member of the United Nations.

Yes you are. Why do you post such nebulous stuff? Are you making a point? What is it?

IMO...handing Palestine to the Jews was a massive mistake. The way in which that happened was both predictable and rather disgusting.

Not that I dont understand the actions of the Jewish settlers...I do. Europe had been openly anti-Jew for a long time. The war financing antics of the Rothschild family was well known and left a bitter taste in the mouths of pretty much everyone. But the Jews emerged from WWII with anger and desperation in their hearts. They expressed such with righteousness as they claimed Palestine. They treated the Palestinians as poorly as Europe had treated them. Worse by some accounts.

The surrounding Arab and Persian nations hated the Jews with a passion...and the Jews in Isreal treated the Arabs and Persians with open contempt.

The stage was set for a never ending battle that rages to this day.

The tragedy of Isreal has haunted the world ever since. I dont claim to know how to untie this knot of faux pas. But it might serve as a balm were Isreal to just allow the 2-state solution to come to fruition.

Its so lonely in m'saddle since m'horse died.

Curious, I travelled in what is now known as "Ukraine". Lemberg.

I saw older Polish people seeing where their parents were born.

As a Canadian, I agree with Trudeau Snr. I want nothing to do with this nationalist nonsense.

1. Similar people/language, similar land/resources - why Israel is richer than Lebanon?

2. We Canadians get along.
