August1991 Posted February 2 Report Posted February 2 Hydro-Quebec knows how much electricity I used. I receive a Hydro-Quebec statement every two months. I pay it. Why do I have to file a federal tax statement and a provincial tax statement? More important, why do I have to file? Quote
John Stone Posted February 2 Report Posted February 2 Quebec residents must file both a fed and prov. tax return due to the province desire for fiscal autonomy from Canada. Quebec collects the tax and pays a portion to the Feds using some byzantine formula Quebec received $14 Billion in equalization payments in 2023 - 2024. Quebec received the Lion's portion of transfer payments - call it the China argument - developing country? This transfer of $$ can be rounded up to almost 30 billion if Health Transfer, Social Transfer and the the Equalization $$. is included. A Quebec referendum re: Separation is anticipated in 2026. Alberta receives no equalization $$ - too rich - contributes about 20 percent of GDP 1 Quote
August1991 Posted February 6 Author Report Posted February 6 John, You make two good points: 1. In Canada, we have a byzantine fiscal/tax system that requires - as an individual, in Quebec - two forms. 2. The Quebec government received $14 billion. As an individual, I received nothing from Albertans. Quote

August1991 Posted March 19 Author Report Posted March 19 In Ontario, there is provincial police: OPP. (Have you seen the Beatles' album?) In the west, Manitoba, Alberta and Saskatchewan, you only have the federal RCMP. In Newfoundland, there is now the RNC. Well said. Quote

herbie Posted April 10 Report Posted April 10 I have to use the bigger version for self employed and can do extra returns for a few friends and relatives.as a favour. Two of them: only ever got 1 disability T4, only 1 T4 and sometimes a T4E Neither one has ever in their lives filled out ain income tax form, they're both over 60. Paid one of those places in the mall their whole lives. Just tole the kids this year they can use my program and file their own themselves. My daughter calle once with a question and once to tell me how easy it was and e-file the return. Ans he's the one with multiple accpunts, investments, stocks, etc. Neither of those friends had an RRSP - one of those guys worked the pipeline and made a huge income last year, I had to convinve him to start an RRSP or else owe taxes!
