The Only Two Days That Matter In The Future

Much that is evil has been done in the name of religion, but much has not. Since we entered the secular age, the wars, massacres and death tolls have made those of the religious ages puny by comparison. The Crusades were nothing compared to World War II. Medieval pogroms were nothing compared to the Holocaust. The campaigns of Mohammed and his descendants, who waged war in the name of Allah, were nothing to the campaigns of Hitler, a secular humanist.

The problem is not religion. The Big Three monotheistic religions are all descended from the same root, and that root has the same message - peace and brotherhood to those who do not wish you harm. The problem has been those religious leaders and organisations that twist the words of their religion around in the interests in worldly power. Leaders like that have actually turned their backs upon religion. This is the problem with Islam, for instance, as Mohammed was such a leader.

Religion does not kill people. People kill people. They may kill in the name of religion, but they also kill in the name of peace, for the good of humanity, and so on. That does not make it so. People kill, but they also lie, to others and to themselves.

Wow, a thread where everyone is right!

Dear Hugo, you are right in the fact that it is not religious tenet that drives 'man to murder man'. "Kill them all, God will know His own" was an actual 'church' edict.

Logic and reason are what separates man from the animals, and to a certain degree religion itself casts those aside. Throughout history it was basically for accumulation of wealth and power. The 'big three' religions without a doubt have killed more numbers, accrued more wealth, and sought to spread it's dogmas by force waaaaaay more than any one nation or individual ever will.

Solution: Learn from the past and carry nothing forward that leads to death.

Jan 1st, 2005: Everyone converts to Buddism or Dalai Lama's religion of Compassion.

Jan 2nd, 2005: All conflict stops. Eternal peace reigns.

End of story.

That's the real way to fix the world.

Have you ever heard of a Buddist extremist?

How about someone who commits terrorism in the name of compassion?

I must admit Nova, this would certainly fix the ills of the world quite well. Can you now figure out a way to get depleted uranium to exit the hole in the ozone layer and close it afterwards?

Now, to be practical, how are we going to get everybody to convert? We in the west are the least of the problem in this aspect as the Militant Islamics will kill you merely for speaking of this.

Hitler was once a great leader. Before we went genocidal. Newspapers across the world praised Hitler for his ability to bring food to the table, among other fixing other societal lackings.

Zoinks! Sure he seized power illegally, committed genocide and launched the most destructive conflict in human history...but dammnit if he didn't make the trains run on time... :blink:

I'm a Christian. I will always be a Christian. There is no way on God's green earth that I will worship a fat statue. This is my belief.

You obviously know butkis about Buddhism, then. It's not a religion so much as a philosophy. There's no god or any other deity, just the belief that living in harmony awith all of the earth and seeking knowledge is the path to enlightenment. That said, I know a couple of real a$$hole Buddhists.... :P

Sounds like some lie-berals.....I have been reading about how the Roosevelt Admin and Truman Admin knew they had soviet spies in them but looked the other way while atomic secrets were sent over to 'Uncle Joe'

No, don't know much about Buddism. I'm never changing my religion though.

Btw, It's human nature to fight. We've always fought. What makes you think we're going to suddenly stop anytime soon?

I disagree, I think that it is our nature to grow and improve. To desire to be better and we use competition against ourselves as a guage. A saint wants to convert the world to the true religion while a bastard wants to enslave them to be the ruler. The rest of us are somewhere inbetween trying to be the best we can be while trying to retain a sense of normallicy.

I'm a happy and peacful atheist, and I would still agree with nova. Uniting the world under one religion, though implausible, would rid the world of problems. In our time and day, hope is scare, yet nova is one of the few rational voices to rise above the crowd. Thank you for starting this topic.

We then proceed to fight about which religion it is considering no one is willing to abandon their own. It'd be great if the world was peaceful, but so long as there is greed, there will be jealousy and therefore, someone always willing to take what you earned. Some will attack to take, others will defend.

One day there will be a one world government centered in, ironically enough, Iraq. There will be a one world leader who will demand loyalty. Just watch....maybe in our lifetimes, maybe not....

I just know I won't be around for it.....

Hey, I'm rational too. What if we were all evil dictators with a nuke pointed at each other's ass, and were so scared shitless of one another that nobody dared make a FUCKING MOVE?

Isn't that just as peaceful as "Planet of The Buddists?"

The idea of this thread was to crate world peace correct? Well the way to do that would be to elminate all borders and eliminate all or all but one religion. No more wars over religion or over land. that elminates all most all the reasons for war. Afterward, create a democracy of this new Earth Sphere Nation so that no one person or group has all the power. this would create world peace

Hi Locke,that is definitely one solution. There are however many others. I'll list a few of them. As you browse over them I'm sure you will find a similarity with your idea.

Another way to ensure world peace is for all mankind to become;

snow plow operators;

porn stars;

policemen;

convenience store owners;

farmers;

tool and die makers;

high profile trial lawyers;

talk show hosts.

As for creating a democracy of this new earth the planet of the snow plow operators (if that is the way mankind chooses to have world peace) can all get together and decide which street and driveway gets plowed by whom. When lunchtime rolls around we will probably wish there was farmers instead of us and at night when we go to sleep in the cabs of our trucks we might wish there were house builders but by George, we sure will have world peace.

Another bonus, as we drive back and forth cleaning the planet of snow we can smile, honk and wave at one another. AHHH, peace!
