Fortunately Sweden didn't go for this. Problem is, these requests keep popping up, how long before they actually do get a foot hold?

Separate laws for Muslims' idea slammed

Published: 28th April 2006 10:08 CET

Sweden's largest Muslim organisation has demanded that Sweden introduce separate laws for Muslims, according to Swedish television. Sweden's equality minister Jens Orback called the proposals "completely unacceptable".

The Swedish Muslim Association, which represents around 70,000 Muslims in Sweden, has sent a letter to all Sweden's main political parties suggesting a number of reforms, SVT's Rapport programme reported.

The proposals include allowing imams into state (public) schools to give Muslim children separate lessons in Islam and their parents' native languages. The letter also said that boys and girls should have separate swimming lessons and that divorces between Muslims should be approved by an imam.

The letter provoked an instant, and damning, response from integration and equality minister Jens Orback.

"We will not have separate laws in Sweden. In Sweden, we are all equal before the law. In Sweden, we have fought for a long time to achieve gender-neutral laws, and to propose that certain groups should not be treated like others is completely unacceptable."

What I can't understand is, if things are so bad for the muslim communities in western countries, why do they, the muslims, stay?

It seems the muslim's want to change everything to the way things were back home and do not want to follow the western way of life.

Why did they emigrate to countries such as Canada, United States, Norway, Sweden etc. if they have

no plans to accept the freedoms and life style of the west? Why are they here? What do they contribute?

Furthermore, since the laws they want to live by are more restrictive than the countries they freely choose to live in, they could all just agree to live by these laws. They don't have to force the laws on the host country. Although if Joe Muslim has second thoughts after getting his hand cut off for stealing, and reported it to the authorities it might get a little sticky.

Good question, but when the question is "why", the answer is usually "money".

In most cases that is true, but their quest for money is no different than a Norwegian oil man's moving to Qatar for financial gain. Yet, I have not heard of westerners' demanding that Qatar set up a seperate judicial system to mete justice according to European/Western legal standards.

Didn't this "sharia law" thing almost happen in Canada, by the way?
