The first debate was a draw. Harris won the stylistic points. Trump won the substance points. If you read the debate, Trump won hands down.

Harris needs a second debate because her internal polling isn't as rosey as the made for news polling. That's also why she tried to do this disastrous border visit today.

When they show the polling based on demographics, she's losing ground in Hispanics, blacks, under 30, and men. The only thing she gained in was women. But she's lost so much in ever other demo that she can't possibly win. So why should Trump debate? To give those people a reason to switch back?

There may be a lot more truth to this than some might suspect. The poles are basically flat, vibrating within the margin of error and not even that much within the margin of error. That's not impossible but it's extremely rare and it suggests that either Americans utterly don't care about this election in the slightest, which seems unlikely, or that the polls aren't as accurate as they should be.

The independent poll that found the teamsters union was coming out in favor of trump for example was a shocker. That trump's support is a little deeper and wider than hers and it's just not showing up in the polling either because of their methodology or because people aren't interested in sharing

Either way, she must suspect that even if she thinks she's not losing, she's not winning. So she's desperate for something that can bring in those last votes that she might need and she knows she can't get there by doing interviews
