Since I've managed to get my work done today I'll probably spend some time watching the Oscars. Hopefully Jon Stewart will avoid the celebrity suck-up and offer up some good lines. If it starts to suck I've got the 40 year old virgin on dvd all qued up. :)

The one thing that I really don't like in recent Oscar shows is the way they show a video montage for each movie. In the old days (prior to Schindler's List) they used to show a couple of minutes from each nominated picture. I think that gives a better indication of the worth of a movie than a series of clips and the theme music.

Stewart's a funny guy, I'm looking forward to that.

Hey, it wasn't too bad. . . and they changed the best picture montage.

I watch about 60 movies per eyar at theaters, but haven't watched the Oscars for a long time. Too long, too boring.

I thought this year was an unusually dull batch of movies. I actually could not award a 'Best Picture', there wasn't one.

The government should do something.

Really? Dull? But they all had political themes and that should appeal to most people here. I caught "Crash" two weeks ago on satellite and found it riveting. Would never guess racial tension in present day Los Angeles could be grist for such entertainment. When Brokeback Mountain lost best picture to Crash I could almost hear the cheers of the anti-SSM crowd. :D

I had a drink when Crash won. Mostly because it was a great film, and Bareback Mountain was a bore, I actually fell asleep. <_<

Theres only so much "I just can't quit yaw" in the space of a few hours, gay or not.

I didn't watch it. I do not like to support Hollywood because of their liberal political views.

I understand that Jon Stewart stunk out the joint. Good. Can't stand his smirking mug and he is not funny. I am constantly amazed at how many leftists I talk to who say they get their "news" from his show.

George Clooney admitted that "We are a little bit out-of-touch in Hollywood", then added, "I think that's probably a good thing."

And I understand that Hollywood again refused to say anything about murdered filmmaker Theo Van Gogh.

Btw, Ann Coulter didn't do too well in her 1st annual Oscar predictions column. Let take a look at her picks: :D

I shall summarize the plots of the five movies nominated for best picture below:

-- “Brokeback Mountain” (gay)

-- “Capote” (death penalty with bonus gay lead)

-- “Crash” (racism)

-- “Good Night, and Good Luck” (McCarthyism)

-- “Munich” (Jew athletes at Munich had it coming)

Everyone says it’s going to be “Crash,” but I think “Crash” is too popular with filmgoers. Moreover, Hollywood feels it has done enough for the blacks. Hollywood can never do enough for the gays. Gays in the military, gays in the Texas Rangers, gays on the range. It’s like a brokeback record! As Pat Buchanan said, homosexuality has gone from “the love that dare not speak its name” to “the love that won’t shut up.” Is the idea of gay cowboys really that new? Didn’t the Village People do that a couple of decades ago?

Crash won.

The best director award will go to ... Ang Lee, director of “Brokeback Mountain.” (For analysis, see above.) Also, this is gays directed by an Asian, which should satisfy the gaysians. Hands down: Ang Lee.

She got that one right. Ang Lee won.

Gaysians.

The nominees for best actor in a leading role are:

-- Philip Seymour Hoffman, “Capote”

-- Terrence Howard, “Hustle & Flow”

-- Heath Ledger, “Brokeback Mountain”

-- Joaquin Phoenix, “Walk the Line”

-- David Strathairn, “Good Night, and Good Luck”

The winner in this category will be ... Philip Seymour Hoffman. The awards committee can’t give everything to “Brokeback Mountain,” and at least Truman Capote was gay (though not a cowboy).

Hoffman won.

The nominees for best actress in a leading role are:

-- Judi Dench, “Mrs. Henderson Presents”

-- Felicity Huffman, “Transamerica”

-- Keira Knightley, “Pride & Prejudice”

-- Charlize Theron, “North Country”

-- Reese Witherspoon, “Walk the Line”

I gather Reese Witherspoon is very good in “Walk the Line,” but that’s irrelevant—this is the Oscars! Felicity Huffman plays a pre-op transsexual in “Transamerica.” That strikes a chord in Hollywood. It’s not exactly gay, but close enough! I say Huffman wins.

Reese Witherspoon won.

best foreign language film. The nominees are:

-- “Don’t Tell” (Italy)

-- “Joyeux Noel” (France)

-- “Paradise Now” (Palestine)

-- “Sophie Scholl” (Germany)

-- “Tsotsi” (South Africa)

After consulting with the Yale admissions committee, the awards committee will give the Oscar to ... “Paradise Now,” a heartwarming story about Palestinian suicide bombers. How good is it? Al-Jazeera gave it 4 1/2 pipe bombs. It’s Air Syria’s featured in-flight movie this month—go figure! I don’t want to spoil the ending for you, but let’s just say there won’t be a sequel.

Tsotsi won.

2 for 5. Better luck next year, Ann. ;)

Man, she's got a way with words, doesn't she? Even if you hate her perspective, you've got to admit she can really nail Hollywood.

I guess if you think unbridled cynicism is a way with words, then yes, I guess she can.

I love hearing about how "out of touch" Hollywood is with "real Americans". Like: when was it ever? What halcyon days are conservatives pining for?

Ann Coulter hasn't enjoyed a film since "Birth of a Nation". Now there's a movie in touch with the heartland!

I heard that Coulter of plagarized that column about the Oscar films. And it doesn't surprise me she'd expect Felicity Huffman to win. Ever notice Coulter's adam's apple? :D

I normally enjoy the Oscar telecast, but I think Stewart was not a good choice as host. His funniest joke was a jab at the liberals in the audience, saying that in picking the Oscars at least they could say they voted for a winner.

The only surprise of the night for me was Crash's win over Brokeback. Brokeback was the only one of the five best picture films that I actually wanted to see and I found it absolutely compelling. Ang Lee did a fantastic job directing and McMurtry/Ossana did wonders with the screenplay. I think Michelle Williams was the best performer in the film.

Why am I not suprised?

I just make up my own news, it has about as much truth and opinion turned into fact as all the major papers. I've lost faith in the media to tell a story and let us decide anymore. Reading a paper is an insult on our inteligence, they make the assumption that we can't form our own opinions.

In reality, however much I disagree, I read the National Post and watch CBC National. I get a little balance that way. I watch Jon Stewart and Cobert after that for the great comedy, not because they have anything decent to say. Cobert is especially funny, I recommend him to all. 12:35MT channel 3.

Here's another Ann Coulter quote for you:

"If conservatives complained about CBS, ABC, NBC, CNN, MSNBC, PBS, the New York Times, the Washington Post, Time, Newsweek, Vanity Fair, NPR, etc. etc. half as much as liberals scream about Fox News, even I would say conservatives were getting to be a bore on the subject."

I guess the fags were upset Bareback Mounting did not win best picture. Aparently a fight broke out between the castmembers afterwards and there was a whole lot of pinching, scratching and hair pulling.

Stewart's a funny guy, I'm looking forward to that.

My favorite was when Stewart mused on Spielberg's hits:

"Steven Spielberg gave us Schindler's List and now Munich. I think I can speak for all Jews when I say I can't wait to see what happens to us next. Ooooh ... a Trilogy."

That cracked me up.

Then he went right into why Bjork wasn't there ... Cheney shot her.
