kimmy Posted January 15, 2006 Report Posted January 15, 2006 Serious policy differences dominated the campaign until these attacks ads started. Which was a novelty, wasn't it? It seems to me that Dinosaurs got more discussion in the 2000 campaign than any policy issue. And 2004 was negative pretty much from the start. I don't remember the 1997 campaign very well, but I suspect it was more of the same. I think it is worth pointing out that the Conservatives' strategy from the start has been to use Harper's speeches and the policy announcements for discussion of policy, and use TV advertising for the negative stuff. They perhaps believed there was some necessity to attack the Liberals but also believed that having Harper do so would again play to the "angry guy" image that has hurt him in the past. So they have had him be Mr Positive out on the campaign trail; when there is mud to be slung at the Liberals they have relied on TV ads to do so. I believe the Liberals probably intended something similar, except that now Paul Martin's speeches have also become primarily attacks on Harper as well; if Martin has anything positive to say in this campaign it's now being completely drowned out by his own campaign's attacks. -k Quote (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Friendly forum facilitator! ┬──┬◡ノ(° -°ノ)
betsy Posted January 15, 2006 Report Posted January 15, 2006 Just watched Question Period on CTV...and they analyzed those ads (guy from Globe and Mail and Craig). They compared the Liberal's Mike Harris ad...and dismissed it as ineffective. They pointed out that hardly anyone remembers Mike Harris....and also pointed out that a number of Canadians did like Mike Harris. Both marvelled at the brilliance of new Tory ad. It negated all the negative ads of the Liberals. Quote

Hicksey Posted January 16, 2006 Report Posted January 16, 2006 Imagine if they used the bit by the Liberal out west that said something about the person who authorized the ads being an arse. Ouch. My butt. That was about as painful to watch as getting fellatio compared to Martin's ads. Harper's ads put forth a quote or two, ask if that's the leader you want ... if not Stand Up For Canada. Martin's ads give a quote or two and then fabricate some conspiracy theory they have about the CPOC to scare people, and then ask them to Choose Your Canada. I would have no problem with the Liberal ads without the unproven conspiracy theories and fear mongering. Tell us what was said and leave that to us to decide whether or not a leader that said those things is worthy of leading the country. geoffrey Posted January 16, 2006 Report Posted January 16, 2006 Offering some quotes is one thing. Drawing off-the-wall inferences is another. I like how the Conservatives don't follow the Liberals into the conspiracy theory trap. There was no: This MP doesn't like the ads. This MP apologized for the ads. This MP was embarassed by the ads. Is Paul Martin's Party falling apart? He won't say. Left that up to interpretation instead of shoveling it down our throats. (Though there's probably more truth in my little paraody then in the LPC attack ads) Quote RealRisk.ca - (Latest Post: Prosecutors have no "Skin in the Game") --

They should make another ad showing the big fat liars. McGuinty is so recent....that should make a lot of blood boil! Quote
legamus Posted January 16, 2006 Report Posted January 16, 2006 i think all political ads are stupid - is anyone actually swayed by these things?? i don't even like listening to interviews with politicians during campaigns b/c you know all you're going to get is a bunch of carefully rehearsed lines and ads are ten times worse.
