Honestly I don't think RNC wants Trump to be the nominee but at least they let their voters decide, unlike the DNC who manipulates their primaries to get the candidate THEY want. Has it ever happened? No i don't think so - even when nixon made his comeback it was against a different opponent. There haven't been all that many single term presidents in the first place. From a purely historical point of view it would be amusing to see trump win. Being the 'first one ever to..." is in his wheelhouse bigly.
