Always a good idea.  Kids that fish and hunt and shoot don't grow up to mug old people or to be liberal party leaders. Both good reasons to do it.

Report indicates that Palestinian refugee camps only exist to foment hatred against the Jews.

If those people were homed 75 years ago it would be almost impossible to have future generations of children grow up steeped in hatred, yearning for the chance to commit genocide against Israelis.

My wife wants to buy an acreage, thinking soon people will have to sustain themselves. I don't know if it's gonna go that far, but she does.

It's sure a good thing we Canucks and Yankees, have such strong leadership...or...wait...Ok maybe she's got a good idea...

She sounds like a keeper :)

Honestly it doesn't take much to be pretty darn close to self sustaining, depending where you are. A pretty small garden plot can produce a lot of ..er.. produce. (english is a stupid language).

If you have even 4 or 5 chickens you'll have all the eggs you can eat and probably some to sell to the neighbours (which is where the term 'egg money' comes from, a small little bit of extra money to squirrel away).  That takes next to no room they can happily feed themselves grubbing through your gardens for bugs and weeds and will eat the veggies you get on sale just when they're expiring from the grocery etc, and a winter garden box can keep producing greens for most of the year.  IF there's a few fishing lakes about or some woods for a bit of hunting (like i have) then there's other sources as well.

With a little ingenuity and skill you can really reduce the impact of food inflation pretty radically with a pretty small hunk of land.

She inherited an old family home with an acre of land just outside of Prague. Her family used to keep chickens and rabbits. Personally...I'd rather eat a rabbit than a chicken but...that's just me.

The problem may eventually become, can we build a self-sustaining property here in Canuckland? I'm still trying to figure out a way to address that one.

Pooping everywhere, stupid fluffy little noses and bad attitudes, always tricking hunters and pestering the ducks - the bastards have it coming.

Well like i said it's actually easier than you might think on a much smaller property than you might think.  My grandad's garden plot couldnt have been much more than about 55 ft by 55 ft and it produced much of their veggies for the year, and he'd shoot enough ducks in the first month of the season to last  a year.  Now - depending where you are ducks may not be around but there's deer, bear, fish, moose etc and the chickens are for eggs - a single chicken can produce a dozen a week in their prime, and eggs last for ages without going bad.

The meat is the only 'hard' part - you can grow enough veggies pretty easily and with minor grreenhouse tech you can do it all year in most parts of the country if you want to.  Meat you probably have to know a farmer or the like but that's doable too most places.

It's  actually surpsiing how close you can get to 'off grid' so to speak with minimal cost and a small hunk of land in a zoning friendly place.  And for most the idea is just to reduce the impact of inflation - if half your produce and groceries comes from your own work it radically reduces the impact of food inflation on you.  I noticed a big difference with just a small garden this last year.

My Toronto garden is always full of hot peppers.

But maybe a small house and yard somewhere like Chatam would suffice. It would be nice to have a pig as well but...another problem we're gonna have is that I retire in a couple years and then we wanna spend at least half the year travelling. If...there's anywhere left to travel to...

Well - that does make it harder.  Animals require care. You can get away with the veggies and stuff tho

Strange that has to be explained to you, but I guess being a Canuck makes you "different." LMAO

You're already on track by promoting global warming. Soon Canada will be like the US midwest prairie. Maybe without the rain, though.

No it has nothing to do with being a Canuck...I hope. It has to do with something you freaks lack...honour. Ya just can't seem to muster any.

That means our north will be able to grow lots more food.    Better be nice to us or we won't sell you any :)
