Could Canada be next, my gawd, I think Christmas is overkill most of the time, but this? Renamed, really to what pray tell. Maybe we should rename Ramadan - The Killing Deserts, or The Sword of the Beheaded.

Anger over attack on Christmas

RELIGIOUS groups have launched an attack on Christmas – calling for it to be renamed and toned down.

A leading Islamic body says the use of the term "Christmas" is politically incorrect because it excludes too many people in multicultural Australia.

The Forum on Australia's Islamic Relations wants a community debate to find an alternative – suggesting the word "festive" as a possible replacement.

And a Queensland Jewish leader has called for an end to the "automatic imposition" of Christmas on the community, saying the season has been reduced to a "shopping festival".

And the Aussie Prime Minister has told them all that Aussie have values & tradition and if these groups do not like it, they are free to leave to where their values are practiced. Good on Howard - the guy has guts!! Canada is a limp wimp!1 :D

Have been there many times - it is a lovely country with happy socially friendly people. Hope to make at least another couple of trips before I meet my maker. :)

To bad Canada can not follow thier lead.

We, the willing, led by the unknowing, are doing the impossible for the ungrateful. We have now done so much for so long with so little, we are now capable of doing anything with nothing.

Also, it's against the law not to vote in Australia. Interesting concept.

With a population their size and strict immigration laws, I can understand it.

And totally agree saving Christmas is important...

BD wrote "President and Mrs. Bush Host Children's Holiday Reception", but didn't tell the whole story.

For years, the President has invited children -- the President, whoever it has been, has invited children to come to the White House at Christmastime, and I'm so glad that you all are the ones that are here with us today.

I know that you got to see Santa earlier. And you might have noticed that Santa's elves have already been here and they've already decorated all of our Christmas trees and help make those Christmas cookies...

Santa Claus is waiting at the door and he's going to lead you all out to get your cookies, your White House Christmas cookies...

As for the Aussies, I agree with the other posters. They are tough, come across as regular folk--not elitist snobs, and under conservative leader John Howard--who was reelected to a 4th term--have grown into the 8th largest economy in the world.

Additionally, their military is credible and commands some respect--just like Canada's used to.

If I recall correctly, they--along with the US--were the first to respond to the tsunami in Indonesia.

Not bad for a country with only 20 million people. :)

I don't really get it. Who, exactly, should be prevented from using the word "Christmas"? After all, most private companies and crown corporations already use generic phrases such as "Happy Holidays" and "Season's Greetings". (Frank Costanza's "Festivus" has somehow not yet caught fire on in a big way.) What, then, is pissing these people off? Do they not like seeing the word "Christmas" on the calendar? My calendar does have the word "Christmas", as well as "Rosh Hashanah", "Yom Kippur", "Guadalupe Day", and ... well, lots more. Why are these jerks picking on Christmas when there's a whole calendar full of oddly named days to pick on? If Christmas is exclusive, then what about "Anzac Day"?

Are these people talking about preventing private individuals from using the word Christmas? Because if that's what they want, they can collectively go do a backflip into an empty pool (metaphorically speaking.)

I'll consider referring to Christmas as "Festive" as soon as they start referring to Ramadan as "Weight Loss Month." How's that for a fair compromise?

I happenned to be listening to CBC Radio Toronto late yesterday afternoon when I heard a remarkable interview with Canadian Mulsim writer Raheel Raza who has just released a book "Not My Jihad" (another story). Just prior to the interview the CBC radio host was blathering on about the "Holiday Season" in perfect CBC political correctness. When Ms. Raza started the interview she immediately chastised the host for his use of politically correct teminology stating that this is Christmas and that in Canada that is an appropriate greeting. She stated being politically correct is DIPLOMATIC DISHONESTY.

The poor CBC Radio host to say the least was taken aback by this statement.

The point is those that are easily offended and champions of political correctness steal from the majority in order placate the minority. It does need to be said that respect and dignity must be shown to all regardless of religious, racial, sexual preference or ethnicity. Political correctness will not accomplish that.

I heard the same interview yesterday (Dec 7th). I like the part where his family was not familiar with the concept of cottage country, tried the camping bit and preferred not to pursue it. HA, HA - senitments also felt by some Canadians I know.
