Absolutely.  You forgot the bit about dying, but I can't disagree with you.

Edit>  Actually, you did mention competition.  My bad.

????    Nobody lives forever.

The climate change loonies are going to have to do much better than that.

How about 72 virgins for driving an EV ?

If you like, sure.  It's better not to post at all when you have no argument, but I can play too.

The argument is clear....hyping the impact of climate change to the point of peoplekind's extinction is not only ignorant, but counter-productive as it causes a reflexive backlash.

Economics will determine the path going forward far more than the stupid ass, dire predictions of an Earth turned into Venus.

I'm sure there will be some people left, and I'm sure we won't get to Venus conditions.  That means you win, right?

We will get to whatever we get too...big deal.    My great grandpa has great stories about the last Ice Age too.   Warming was very much welcomed after that.

There is no winning or losing here...it just is what it is.

Am I suppose to slit my wrists just because some climate change whackos have already made themselves victims for political gain ?

One can tax, harangue, belittle, etc all they like in the West about Global Warming...add another billion people to this rock and all those climate change efforts will be worthless as a Canadian penny.

Hell yea...most of present day Canada was under a sheet of ice over 3 kilometers high.

These same wackos would complain about climate change back then too.

There certainly is change in my neck of the woods...but most BC residents know the cause: immoral forestry practices...like not clearing out beetle kill from the forest while using Agent Orange-like herbicides on broad-leaf trees as they are 'junk wood'. BC forests are a mess as a result.

You're not supposed to do anything.  If there's one thing we do know for certain, nothing individuals (or even extremely large groups of individuals) do will make the blindest bit of difference.

Unless some bright spark comes up cold fusion, or a CO2/Methane funnel into space, or something along those lines.

You are absolutely right that it just is what it is.  We have no more right to the planet than the Dodo had and what happens will happen.  We're just smart enough to have fun arguing about it.

I don't know how old you are, but the only way you're actually winning this argument is if you get back to me in thirty years and say, "see, I told you so".

Given the depth of the sheet of ice over Canada at the moment, they would have been right too.

Again, there is no argument.   Reality is the argument, not climate change fantasies about reducing "footprints" and covering the planet in PV panels.

I am not a denier....hell my country has spent more on the data collection and analysis than any other (NASA/NOAA/etc.)....still does even with Trump.

Mankind will adapt, just as it has always done before.

So what's the argument then?  I too believe we haven't got the slightest clue what to do about it, nor the will to do it if we did. I too think we will adapt, eventually, maybe with far fewer people left than you think we'll have.  I don't think it's going to be pretty while we do.  Horrific, in fact.

This rock is good for about a billion humans, frankly. Way too many already.

I would like to see Earth like it was in the Carboniferous Period...20%-35% oxygen content...explosive air...that would have been fun...heh.

I'm more of a Pleistocene Epoch kinda guy....at least one ice age....and a time when our knuckle dragging ancestors would beat the crap out of anybody who tried to stop the burning of trees with a carbon tax.

It's like a big mystery around here...where's the forest gone???

Uhhh...you cut the f****** down, lads.

Horrific compared to what ?   Compared to the Garden of Eden it has been for the past 100,000 years, with no conflicts and hippy love ?

"Pretty" is a relative notion....never before have so many hominids lived and thrived on the planet.    Total infestation until resources are exceeded.

Love it...the French don't have any more big ass old growth forests to rebuild the ND cathedral roof.    Might have to use laminated beams, trusses, or (gulp)....steel !

Yes indeed. The construction of hundreds of frigates and ships of the line for the French fleet will do that.

So the argument is reduced to simply, how bad is it going to get, and when?  I have no idea.  I do think it's going to be far worse then you think.  As the world gets smaller, and the population gets larger, and the resources dwindle, the oceans fill up with plastic, and the only trees left on the planet are those providing us with palm oil,  I think it's going to get really bad.  But there is no badness scale I can think of to use.  Worse than it's been in the past, I think, but people can only die once.

So like...worse than WW2 ?    Worse than total thermonuclear war ?   Worse than the last mass extinction ?    Worse than when hominids did not even exist ?

I agree there is no badness scale....and any attempt to scare people into reacting to such claims will not make any difference.

Just sit back and enjoy the ride....the Laws of Thermodynamics both giveth and taketh away.

Here's the beauty of it all...the Earth will do fine. It will take about 20 million years to recover from the human infestation after we kill ourselves off.

True...the Earth does not give a damn either way.    Remember the Hellstrom Chronicle ?     Insects will inherit the earth after feasting on our decaying bodies.

I do recall the Hellstrom Chronicle...

We literally had our chance. A great thing happened in 1968 (ish) that much of the planet ignored for religious reasons...birth control for females. Alas...only developed nations took to the cure. Now due to 'lack of population' (ie economic reasons)...we feel the need to urge on this unneeded growth

Now we're awash in humans...and more coming.

Well, on  a personal note, I have started to search for a counter-intuitive solution to global warming...errr...I mean climate change.

I will have to upgrade to a two stage snow blower/thrower to more efficiently manage higher snowfall rates, but I can't decide whether to go with the proven gasoline powered goliath of old or join the boutique club of cheap, wimpy battery powered units with lithium batteries.  City snow plows leave huge berms at the end of the driveway and the eco-warriors don't have a good solution yet besides my aching back and cardiac stress.

I guess it goes back to Apocalypse Now...and loving the smell of petroleum in the morning.

This is how mankind adapts !
