August1991 Posted August 23, 2005 Report Posted August 23, 2005 I saw the web site www.archive.org logged in here. Anyone know what's up? On a related note, I notice that Greg has added the following to the Rules and Regulations: By participating in these forums, you grant us the right and licence to use, reproduce and display any submissions to the forum without compensation to you or any one else. Once again, what's up? Quote
Shady Posted August 24, 2005 Report Posted August 24, 2005 Yeah, that seems a little sneaky. I guess that also means don't bother pursuing a career in politics. What you say in this forum could come back to haunt you as a television commerical. Quote
Forum Admin Greg Posted August 24, 2005 Forum Admin Report Posted August 24, 2005 I saw the web site www.archive.org logged in here. Anyone know what's up? What you're seeing is the Way Back Machine spider hitting the website. The Way Back Machine is a digital archive of the Internet. So when the spider is browsing the forums, it is digitally backing up the contents of the website so that future generations can see what resided on Maple Leaf Web or MLW forums even if MLW does not exist anymore. On a related note, I notice that Greg has added the following to the Rules and Regulations:By participating in these forums, you grant us the right and licence to use, reproduce and display any submissions to the forum without compensation to you or any one else. Once again, what's up? What this basically says is that you cannot unilaterally decide one day that you want everything that you've posted in these forms removed. By posting in these forums, you're granting us the right to display your postings publicly, without compensation. Yeah, that seems a little sneaky. I guess that also means don't bother pursuing a career in politics. What you say in this forum could come back to haunt you as a television commerical. We're publicly stating our position, so I wouldn't call it sneaky. It's doubtful anything you say in these forums is going to hurt any career in politics, but that isn't why we've decided to make this rule. The rule stands to protect us from unreasonable and unwarranted requests, not to stop you from saying stupid things that may or may not hurt your future career prospects. The Archive.org "WayBack Machine" is great especially for news sites that redesign their URLs every few months... or make old content disappear too quickly... or censor an article after too many people start critically examining its meaning and/or consequences. I found a site with some great Javascript "Bookmarklets". One of them I put in my "Favorites/Links" folder so any time I follow a link from a website, and it turns out the target is gone (i.e. 404 not found, etc.) I just click the button on my "Links" bar, and/or paste in the URL after "/*/" below... Very handy! javascript:location.href='http://web.archive.org/web/*/'+document.location.href; Reproduce without a name, I presume. Oterwise, $1 per word. Ten cents for Hugo. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> PS: "ouch" (burn!) Quote
