August1991 Posted July 11, 2005 Report Posted July 11, 2005 Clarkson was named in 1999 for a five year term. In 2004, PM2 then named her for one more year only. So, who's next? Prime Minister Paul Martin today announced that Her Majesty the Queen has been pleased to approve the continuance in office of Her Excellency the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson as Governor General until September 2005. PM2's web siteFrankly, I think I'd take Rae as a compromise. (The old Left Layton types detest Rae since he's gone new wave Blair like all the other Left in the known universe excepting Cuba, North Korea and Canada.) As a minimum, we'd no longer have such a smarmy GG web site. (Who the hell is John Ralston Saul and why does his name take up so much space on the screen? It's even more absurd in French.) But getting back to the point, why and how does PM2 think this'll get him votes? Quote
August1991 Posted July 11, 2005 Author Report Posted July 11, 2005 High on a long list of names for possible successors is Bob Rae, who has distanced himself from his past as NDP premier of Ontario. Other names being tossed around include former Progressive Conservative prime minister Joe Clark, current Ontario Lt.-Gov. James Bartleman, and former Liberal Ontario premier David Peterson. A non-political name being talked about is Marc Garneau, former astronaut and currently Canadian Space Agency president. Ottawa CitizenJoe Clak? Garneau is a franco - as tradition would dictate - but he's not savvy. (Did Peterson do a deal to take potential heat for Stronach in exchange for GG?) Liberal invented "tradition" would go with a woman francophone, non-Quebec, non-politico: Antonine Maillet, who else is there.... Jocelyne Blouin? Quote
stubblejumper Posted July 12, 2005 Report Posted July 12, 2005 I heard on the radio today that the current Lt. Gov of Ontario is the front runner, he is of first nations descent. Ralston-Saul is her husband and one of this countries greatest minds.Read one of his many books. Quote

(Did Peterson do a deal to take potential heat for Stronach in exchange for GG?) I can't hear the name Marc Garneau without thinking of a Tonight Show where Jay Leno mentioned Garneau in his opening monologue. It went something along the lines of... Canadian Space Agency chief Marc Garneau challenged Canadians to go to Mars in a speech yesterday. Then, Marc's mom drove Marc and the Canadian Space Agency to Applebee's for pie and ice-cream. John Ralston Saul!? John Ralston Saul!? Mr. Self important smarmy governor general's bitch? Argus Posted July 12, 2005 Report Posted July 12, 2005 Joe Clark, a reward for his years of loyalty to the Liberal government. Besides, he's such a pompous windbag the job is perfect for him. mirror Posted July 12, 2005 Report Posted July 12, 2005 August Bob Rae is probably going to get the posting seeing as he has been trying to distance himself from his New Democratic past. Quote
Bakunin Posted July 13, 2005 Report Posted July 13, 2005 I think its time to abolish all this monarchist bullshit. Its costly, its not democratic and its obsolete... We just saw that even with a minority government, the power is exclusive to the parliamant. British and canada must grow up just like the american and the french did... Quote
mcqueen625 Posted July 13, 2005 Report Posted July 13, 2005 Nothing would surprise me coming from Martin and team. It would even surprise me if Martin were to name a francophone, separatist from Quebec to the post of G.G.. We may as well have a separatist GG, and maybe that will destroy the myth that this once esteemed office actually does something besides rubber stamp decision made by our appointed, and unaccountable judiciary. After all most of the legislation of late has come from decisions made by this unelected body. It will also show quite clearly that The Senate is also just another useless group of appointed individual's who have outlived their usefullness. They too have become just another rubber stamp for a PM and a Parliament that takes their marching orders from the judiciary. When all is said and done we would be far better off to disband this whole lot and instead elect the judiciary to specific fixed terms in office. At the very least it would make them accountable to the people of Canada who are expected to pay their exorbitant salaries. Quote
Bro Posted July 13, 2005 Report Posted July 13, 2005 Nothing would surprise me coming from Martin and team. It would even surprise me if Martin were to name a francophone, separatist from Quebec to the post of G.G.. You hit the nail on the head. The liberals want the monarchy completely out of the picture,to hell with anglo traditions.Having a Lapierre type person in that office would enable them to kill it from within. The original plan was for ms. clarkson to spend extavagantly until a majority of Canadians would say it is costing too much in taxes, but the liberals forgot that as long as the liberal party is wasting tax money, most Canadians are willing to accept that fact. mirror Posted July 13, 2005 Report Posted July 13, 2005 Just out of curiosity how much is our GG paid, and how much do you think our GG should be paid? Quote
Canuck E Stan Posted July 13, 2005 Report Posted July 13, 2005 The best Canadian for GG should be a non political Canadian, one that most of us respect. Who better than Rick Hanson, man in motion. He's an average guy who done good. Paul should give him the job. I don't think anybody would be offended with Rick. mirror Posted July 25, 2005 Report Posted July 25, 2005 CBC has learned who is not on the list: Garneau Hanson Erasmus Fontaine Manning Clark CBC has not learned who is on the list but that the decision is imminent. Jeez, I hope it is Rae. It will shut him up, at least politically. Quote
stubblejumper Posted July 26, 2005 Report Posted July 26, 2005 Like I said it will be the current Lt Gov of Ontario. He's aboriginal and from Ontario. Sews up some political loose ends. Quote
mirror Posted July 27, 2005 Report Posted July 27, 2005 The Globe this morning is suggesting that the next GG will be a francophone woman from Quebec to help offset the Bloc's popularity. Too bad this has to be politicized however better to live in the real world. Quote

Its already frustrating enough to be paying millions $ for this piece of crap, we don't want to be attached to it... Quote
mirror Posted July 27, 2005 Report Posted July 27, 2005 I think a lot depends on the personality of the individual in the position. According to the Globe article the current female LG in Quebec is quite popular. Quote

What would you propose to change it ? Are you a republican(small r) ? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> We surely don't need an undemocratically elected GG. But something that could be interesting would be like in france where they have a prime minister like us for the federal government and a President wich is independant, and have limited power like taking care of the foreign affaire, international role and etc. Someone wich would give a spirit to this country. The president maybe could fix the link bettween the province and the federal cause right now its more like the federal doing pretty much whatever he want and not giving a shit about the province... mirror Posted July 27, 2005 Report Posted July 27, 2005 However, it would open the door to people like Quebec Lieutenant-Governor Lise Thibeault, lawyer Paule Gauthier and businesswoman Guylaine Saucier — both towering figures in Quebec public life — and renowned actress and comedian Monique Mercure, the long-time director of the National Theatre School. So if it were one of these four which one would you prefer? Quote
Bakunin Posted July 27, 2005 Report Posted July 27, 2005 I don't know the 3 first but anyway i would go with Monique Mercure. Specifically because she played in a popular quebec movie "Deux femmes en or" in the 1970's wich i would qualify as soft porn Deux femmes en or (1970)Plot Summary: Two women leaving in the suburban of Montreal find difficult time waiting for their frequently absent husbands... (more) User Comments: An film worth renting only for boomers and elderlies., 30 July 1999 Author: patate-2 from Montréal User Comments: A big commercial success and a technical flop. Many local star went naked in this film including an real-life union leader, singers and a big-time stand-up comic. Trudeau made a cameo at the football stadium. With most of them now dead or long survivors of their retirement age, it is nice to see how sexy they were then before their hair had turned white. Shooting this milestone of the sexual revolution must have been great fun. Unfortunatly i cant find picture of her while she was younger :/ if i remember well she was pretty, now she his old and ugly. But if ever she get choosen as GG, maybe some fanatic will rent the movie, take a screenshot of her naked and publish it on the net. So ? look interesting ? Maybe a quebec woman as GG wasn't that much a bad idea after all It would be less boring at least... Quote
