JerrySeinfeld Posted June 30, 2005 Report Posted June 30, 2005 In it's bid to be a "big world class city", Toronto has tried to get the Olympics, tried to be a real NBA, NFL city.....gosh so embarrassing for a group of people so obsessed with NOT being american lol. But alas, the big smokers are relegated to being just an average large Canadian city. But wait! Maybe It''s the Torontonians who are the small towners... What do we usually think about small town people: 1. Close minded -- set in their ways. 2. Not much of a clue as to what's going on in the rest of the country. 3. Think that everyone else's values are bad, but those in my town are good. 4. Can't really imagine living anywhere else. 5. Brainwahed by a small group of media; thinking that's the only perspective that matters. Wait a minute! I just realized: Toronto is the biggest small town on the planet. As badly as Torontonians wish they were a world class city, they keep behaving like a bunch of small town Canadians, while the rest of the country keeps an open mind to new things. What a sad state for this poor city with an inferiority complex. Poor Toronto. Oh well; at least they have the Blue Jays. lol. Quote

kimmy Posted June 30, 2005 Report Posted June 30, 2005 Earlier this week some asshat from Toronto wrote to the Journal to say that he was glad that because of the flooding, he would not have to listen to western farmers crying about drought for a few years. I was bemused. -k Quote (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Friendly forum facilitator! ┬──┬◡ノ(° -°ノ)

August1991 Posted July 1, 2005 Report Posted July 1, 2005 My opinion? Give Torontonians a break. Toronto is a city with many millions of ordinary people trying to manage their lives. Toronto is a big city in a small pond, and Toronto players struggle to matter. English Canada is a big country with a city: Toronto. IME, Canadians in PEI and Lethbridge know this, but it seems that Torontonians are confused. (Peter Ustinov described Toronto as New York organized by the Swiss. Ustinov was an actor; few if any Swiss or New Yorkers know of the comment - most Torontonians do. Point made.) Canada is a good country (English-speaking but not American) and Toronto is a good city (big, on a lake and gays marry there.) Toronto is not Chicago. The provinces of Canada must really figure out what the hell they want. Quote
daniel Posted July 1, 2005 Report Posted July 1, 2005 The "world-class city" and Olympic bid fiascos were when Mel Lastman coupled with Mike Harris Conservative governmetn support. Lastman tried it once before with the Ontario Liberal support too. Thank god now Toronto has come to its senses working towards what needs to be done instead of the flash and no-substance of the years gone by. Quote

It'snot even fair to mention the two cities in the same sentence; Vanouver blows away the big smoke. Vancouver is the best city in Canada by a long shot and the world will see it in 2010. Quote

Netherlands Posted July 1, 2005 Report Posted July 1, 2005 As a resident of a Toronto-suburb, I have to come to the defence of this small town. I think you can find a wide varierty of views here, from all across the political spectrum. The city is always changing, in terms of demographics and neighbourhood redevelopment. As for media, I don't think anywhere else in Canada has as many choices as we do: I can watch the nightly news on at least seven local channels (it would be eight, but I don't know Mandarin); I can read 6 daily newspapers; and my radio has dozens of stations. That gives a lot of diversity. As for Vancouver, I've never been there, but just from seeing pictures of it, it has to be Canada's greatest city. It looks just gorgeous - a backdrop of mountains on one side, the ocean on the other. I would love to live there, and I hope to go there for the Olympics, if not sooner. Quote
Guest eureka Posted July 1, 2005 Report Posted July 1, 2005 Toronto is now the most multi-cultural city in the world by a long marhin. It shows it, too. It is also one of the most interesting to explore outside of some of the cities of the old world. The variety of choices is more than one could sample in a lifetime. That said, I no longer want the excitement. Vancouver would suit me better as the boring, overgrown mill town that it is! Quote

kimmy Posted July 1, 2005 Report Posted July 1, 2005 Vancouver is a neat place to visit, but I would never live there again. Winter there might not be cold, but it is bleak, wet, and thoroughly crappy. The traffic congestion causes the local populus to become aggressive and stupid, like too many rats crammed into a small cage. I also got tired of being propositioned by Honduran drug-dealers every time I went for a walk, and being handed those "You Have Been Scouted For Porn!" business cards when I went to the mall. Neat tourist attractions, though. Gastown and Granville Island are super cool. Bah I love all of Canada, except Alberta. The only good thing to come out of there were the Oilers. And Kimmy, of course. But that practically goes without saying! -k Quote (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Friendly forum facilitator! ┬──┬◡ノ(° -°ノ)
