The U.S. has excess production of milk, not beans and nuts.   Vegans don't matter as much.

So? US dairy farmers could shift their production to more beans and nuts. I really would much appreciate it.

By the way, maybe the reason the US doesn't export as much as it would like is because it subsidizes the wrong stuff. Milk tastes gross. Subsidize cherries and other fruits and expect to grow your trade surplus real fast. :)

Not likely...the lacteal fluid extracted from the female of the bovine species is a food staple and is also used in many other, higher margin products.   Mammals like milk.

The vegans who want to eat more healthy produce will always be a smaller, fringe market.

Whatever happened to supporting minority privileges... er... I mean rights?

Ask Justin Trudeau how that has worked out so far.

But on a more serious note, should the vegan minority be subsidizing the omnivorous majority's food consumption?

Yes, because the vegan minority benefits more from the much larger capital investment and farming/distribution infrastrusture paid for by the omnivores.

Proportionately, omnivores use up more land than vegans do. Our food goes straight from field to mouth, yours goes to the ranch first.

But there is no separate vegan distribution channel, not even for local growers.   Vegans are a boutique side-show.

No I don't...when I stroll my cart past the tiny section dedicated to "organics" and "vegan", I just laugh at the much higher prices and think, "Suckers !"

I don't even shop in that section. Do you shop in the produce section?

I don't shop per se, knowing exactly what I want and where it is.   "Vegan" is a higher margin, niche market for those who will pay....most won't.

The best part is that it's not subsidized.

If that makes your day, that is great....most people just don't care.

And that's why we're drowning in government debt.

I guess so. May as well max it out before declaring bankruptcy too.

Supply-management does not affect me directly as a vegan shopper in Canada far as I know. As far as I know, the Government does not subsidies milk products but rather just limits competition. This means that the buyers of milk products bear the full brunt of the cost of milk-production in Canada. If Canada should adopt the US policy of subsidizing milk products, then I would be subsidizing other people's milk purchases even though I don't buy milk products myself. looking at it from the standpoint of user-pay, supply-management far surpasses subsidies both economically and morally.

Should push come to shove, Canada should propose that the US adopt a North-American supply-management system and stop subsidizing its milk products. I'm not saying that supply-management is a good thing, but just that subsidies are even worse and I don't want us to jump from the frying pan of supply-management into the fire of subsidies.

Thanks for that. So, what are your thoughts on supply-management vs. subsidies? Though both are harmful, do you see one as worse than the other?

Apparently many Canadians near the border do not agree with you, as they are more than willing to drive across the U.S. border to buy a lot more than just dairy.   Consumers in Canada get hosed by many provincial and federal policies that go far beyond milk, and it has nothing to do with morals.

I know many people who will drive to Houlton Maine to pick up dairy products, chicken and turkey, plus a shit tonne of other things , plus they take advantage of the coupons making it even cheaper...... a drive of over 120 KM....is worth the drive....

We, the willing, led by the unknowing, are doing the impossible for the ungrateful. We have now done so much for so long with so little, we are now capable of doing anything with nothing.
