angrypenguin
After the urging by several friends to run as a MPP in Ontario if I had decided to stay here, I looked into the job, the salary, and the benefits. HOLY MOLY. These guys are woefully underpaid, and their pensions SUCK. In many ways, being a teacher in Ontario is better, or a police officer. SERIOUSLY. Look, I'm all for cutting public spending but it really shouldn't surprise anyone that our MPPs all suck.

scribblet
MPPs don't get a pension but that's no reason to want to run for public office.

According to this a one-term MPP will get 6 months payout. Generally the private sector doesn't get this. The PCs, I believe, set the current terms expressly to prevent people running for government to get rich.

Sure, but the total depressing salary is a reason not to, that and the fact that you have 0 job security.

Probably looks good on a resume...who needs a pension with a revolving door or two awaiting you after your term in office?

I would argue "qualified" folks. Sure, if you are on your way up the career ladder a MPP title is great. That said for those of us already making twice the salary who could make more, there's no way in hell we'd leave our jobs to become a MPP. While INCOME IS NOT an indicator as far as whether or not one would be successful serving the public, I think it is safe to say it is an indicator to years in the workplace, and the more you make, the more years you probably have spent "at work". I'd rather have a seasoned MPP than the trifecta of kids running for the Niagara seat.
