Uh, isn't asking if the cbc is in fact 'free press' true to the topic of this forum? (Yes BC, believe it or not, but I think we actually agree on this...?)

don't be fooled by the shifting pea... the original statement concerning the CBC wasn't offered in the form of a 'Jeopardy question'. The poster you're replying to has a long-standing fixation with claiming the CBC is "state controlled"... no question about it; it's made as a de facto statement of fact. And it's one made repeatedly, over and over again... regardless if there's even the slightest or NO tie to the current thread/topic of discussion. Of course, one might wonder why a claimed American would so fixate on the CBC, but I digress...

my earlier point, one made repeatedly through an assortment of past threads where the guy's fixation has been raised previously, is to draw the distinction between "state controlled" (as in actual "state media"), versus "public sector media"... which the CBC actually is.

now, in keeping with the actual thread topic, the appropriate question might be: is the public sector CBC media... free press?

Cant answer that question because it would be off topic to explore how ownership may or may not influence the output.

Thanks for bring me up to date on the back ground. I actually listen to CBC radio in the car more than anything (well at least since my subscription to Xm radio expired). I actually trust the CBC to give me a reasonably balanced take on the news more than any other news broadcaster here in Canada, be it domestic or other wise. My concern and the reason for my original post has to do with privately funded 'media'. When my mother started posting me articles from the rebel (which I had never heard of at the time) I researched them and discovered that hey had only started their web site in 2014 and were bent on PC agenda and it had nothing to do journalism. Just to be clear I am not happy with any of our political parties and I would agree with "Mohamed Al-Fayed" when he stated to George Stroumboulopoulos, that hey were "all donkeys". (see link below). American media is the best example of what I don't want our media to become and slowly I am loosing faith in the CBC and the BBC. But, if giving a journalist from the Rebel equal access than so be it if it means free and fair journalism. The same access should then be given to RT, PressTV and alturnative media such as WeAreChange or Press for Truth etc...

I do believe the CBC is not impartial and does not have full free range to criticize the government of the day precisely because it is funded by the government. I believe for their to be a free press-the press can not be funded by the government of the day or any government.

Governments funding the press necessarily means restricting its ability to be impartial. To think otherwise is naïve.

The current bias in favour of Trudeau by the CBC is to the point of nausea. The meet and greet where members of the public dropped in for 5 minute visits was an example of government propaganda using the CBC-how was that free? How is it free to have Trudeau sitting and being shown listening gravely to people but offering nothing? It was a photo op no different than the man who invented that technique, Joseph Goebels, the Nazi Propaganda Minister and first man to showcase leaders in films looking like they were listening to people.

Free press? We do have it but it comes today in many forms of media and certainly not the CBC or CTV or any mainstream t.v. or radio station which reflect the politics of their owners and sponsors.

Free press usually comes in the form of bloggers, editorialists, columnists but even they today are limited by the reality of sponsorship which censors most journalists from absolute free reign.

Absolute free press is impossible but we at least can criticize the government openly albeit don't expect Peter Mansbridge or Ms. LaPalme to pull a Mike Wallace on Justin. We have no one capable of cross examining him without fawning all over him at this point.

Me personally as a journalist, I would bring a barf bag to interview him. The platitudes in the articles quoting him give me indigestion.

When was the last time anyone actually interviewed him and got an answer other than an uh uh uh. Free press digs and digs and keeps digging until it gets an answer. At this point the moment he utters an uh uh uh followed by a platitude sound bite the tv press moves on.

Today's news media on tv limited to 10 second sound bites is limited by atrophied attention spans. Freedom of the media's greatest limitation is the shrinking attention span of the average Canadian, many who don't listen, read or write.

60-70% of the country votes center left or left, yet it is somehow unlikely that the majority of those who attain a liberal arts degree in journalism aren't at least as much left as the country in general? Or that on an individual basis, if one of those 60-70% who are left leaning, and lets not kid ourselves, it's probably higher than 60-70, was to stray a little into personal bias and present the news from that biased pov, are they likely to suddenly lean right, or even more left? Of course this isnt even to mention that women now dominate on air and in journalism schools, and women tend to be more left leaning than men. So of course our media is left leaning, and its only getting worse, but if you are one of the believers you don't mind, they are parroting your world view after all, and left is easy, left is nice, and we wouldn't want to appear as anything but that in Canada.
