Topaz Posted October 18, 2015 Report Posted October 18, 2015 Billionaire T. Boone Pickens is suing the Ontario government under the NAFTA for 700million dealing with the Wind Turbines, which he says he wasn't treated fairly. These trade deals are not so free and the ones that the feds have sign also has a clause were Canada can be sued and Canada is the most sued country by the article. If this goes through will hydro rates go up? http://www.msn.com/en-ca/money/topstories/texas-oil-billionaire-sues-ontario-for-dollar700-million-under-nafta-rules/ar-AAfwNEs?ocid=spartandhp Quote
ReeferMadness Posted October 18, 2015 Report Posted October 18, 2015 Yup. That's the problem with these trade deals (which are really mostly investor deals). They give corporations rights that citizens don't have. You can sue a country and have your case heard in secret by a tribunal of trade lawyers. And the awards can't be appealed. How sweet is that. This is something that is almost never brought up in the media, for whatever reason. And the TPP would see that right be given to a corporations in a bunch more countries. Wynne decided to give away billions to wind companies based on local content. This goes against the spirit of FTAs. The solution is not to introduce economically nonsensical programs and try to make them palatable by claiming they 'create jobs'. Quote

The solution is not to introduce economically nonsensical programs and try to make them palatable by claiming they 'create jobs'. His allegation is that the local preference was encouraged by bribes, uhm, I mean, donations to the Liberal party from the winning bidders. Quote It is an inverted moral calculus that tries to persuade the world to demonize one state that tries its civilized best to abide in a difficult time and place, and rides merrily by the examples and practices of dozens of states and leaderships that drop into brutality every day without a twinge of regret or a whisper of condemnation. - Rex Murphy
TimG Posted October 18, 2015 Report Posted October 18, 2015 And we already have a remedy that's accessible by billionaires - it's called the courts. Why do we give corporations special secret tribunals whose rulings can't be appealed? How fair would the US or Mexican court system be to Canadian corporations? The panels exist so each country can have their own representative on them. That is not possible within the individual courts of each country. Quote

scribblet Posted October 18, 2015 Report Posted October 18, 2015 It’s about payoffs for Wind Power contracts and $18,600 in donations that NextEra made to the Ontariio Liberal Party in 2011. He is saying it had undue influence on the auction, he should win his case. Hydro One and the corrupt Liberal Government need to be held accountable for their actions. MiddleClassCentrist Posted October 18, 2015 Report Posted October 18, 2015 how is it... that the US can have the Buy America legislation and receive no lawsuits. Yet we always do? The TPP is just another typical conservative boondoggle that will hand over the rights and freedoms of Canadian Citizens to Multinational Corporations. These agreements are only good for corporations. If our elected representatives went to the free trade meetings looking at the agreement through the eyes of a Canadian Citizen, we'd never sign one. Quote Ideology does not make good policy. Good policy comes from an analysis of options, comparison of options and selection of one option that works best in the current situation. This option is often a compromise between ideologies.

And if we're not part of it, we lose preferred status with half the world, costing us tends of billions in trade. Quote
