Argus Posted October 6, 2015 Author Report Posted October 6, 2015 Now why would anyone set up a factory in Canada to ship globally if Canada is not part of the TPP? Seems to me that not signing the TPP will ensure that a lot of manufacturing will relocate to the US to take advantage of the TPP. The best take on this I have heard was last week, one of the economists being interviewed said that if the deal fell apart, it wasn't that big a deal, but if it went ahead and Canada wasn't part if it would be an economic disaster as we'd face tariff walls from 40% of the world's population, including 3 of our 4 biggest trading partners. Canada had no choice but to get in on this, and anyone who thinks otherwise is a liar or a fool. Argus Posted October 6, 2015 Author Report Posted October 6, 2015 I didn't know the auto industry in Canada exported over 85% of stuff we make in Canada prior to learning about the TPP! From today's stock market Magna +.7 Exco +4 Martinereau +3.03 Linamar +1.63 If the deal was bad for auto parts would they all be up today? Because Unifor said so Last week they said 26k jobs would be lost. Today they said 20k jobs will be lost. And an independent study done by UoT said that 3/4 of 1% of jobs would be affected. To hell with Unions. I'm not unionized. I have my job because of what's in my head. I don't need some union to protect me. #entitlement. Quote My views are my own and not those of my employer.

Of course they are up, it gives them more flexibility when it comes to where they make their parts. It has nothing to do with benefiting Canada. Magna already builds cars in Austria for crap sake. The US and CDN stock market today was in happy happy land, most likely because of this deal. Quote My views are my own and not those of my employer.

Parts manufacturers can make their parts in Vietman or Malaysia now instead of just NAFTA. I don't see how anyone thinks their shares going up is a sign of benefiting Canada. Wilber Posted October 6, 2015 Report Posted October 6, 2015 (edited) Sigh. I tried folks, I tried. Keep trying. How many vehicles are being built in Vietnam and Malaysia that we can make parts for? A company's stock going up means something has benefited that company. Period. Edited October 6, 2015 by Wilber Quote "Never trust a man who has not a single redeeming vice". WSC
PIK Posted October 6, 2015 Report Posted October 6, 2015 I just read in today's citizen that mulcair has said no. Not bound, but no to the deal if he wins. I was giving mulcair the benefit of doubt, over trudeau, but he has failed. As soon as the deal was announced UNIFOR leader says 20,000 jobs gone without having any idea what is in it and very shortly mulcair saying the same number. At least justin was acting like a leader on this file. Quote Toronto, like a roach motel in the middle of a pretty living room.

By saying "We'll look at it", he neither backs himself into a corner by supporting the deal, or into another corner by declaring he's against it. But really, at the end of the day, the deal will be ratified regardless of who wins the election. There's no way even an NDP government is going to back out of TPP. It's just populist mumbo jumbo, much like the Liberals' anti-NAFTA declarations in the 1993 election. Quote

ToadBrother Posted October 6, 2015 Report Posted October 6, 2015 So you're saying he supports it but is lying. For lack of a better term, yes, much as I'm certain Chretien was lying about NAFTA. I'm sure in the unlikely event that the NDP form a government, they will come up with some sort of awkward excuse or claim some minor victory sufficient to ratify the deal. Heck, even Harper is playing a bit of a populist game by promising Parliament will have a vote on TPP, even though ratification of treaties does not require Parliamentary approval. Quote

I got the invite yesterday in my email, and I live right there so it would have been pretty convenient if I'd only read the email. Oh well. Quote
