Big Guy
The writs have dropped, our government has been dissolved and we are into an election campaign. I have been searching the web and have been unable to find out who is in charge now that we do not have a government. We will be without a government for almost 2 months. What if there is a drastic change in our war in the Middle East - who (and how) decides if we get out or send more troops? Some (any) emergency happens that requires someone to direct troops or money or other assistance. What if Putin invades the Baltics - will we have to wait for two months to decide a response? Who is in charge right now? Edited August 4, 2015 by Big Guy
Icebound
Business stops in the House of Commons, but the Government keeps operating until it is turned over after the election.

WWWTT
Who is in charge right now? Everybody from the senate is back on the payroll. Excellent question, I never thought about this fact. WWWTT

bush_cheney2004
Seriously.....people don't know how the government works in Canada, but are experts on the U.S. ? Too funny !
WWWTT
You need a link? What do you think, all of a sudden we are just into anarchy? This is not China. No I don't need a link, but you do if you want to back up your claim. Parliament has been dissolved. Therefore all those sitting in the lower house are no longer an MP and lose their titles. We still have the upper house and they are now the sitting members of parliament whom direct the country. WWWTT
WWWTT
Seriously.....people don't know how the government works in Canada, but are experts on the U.S. ? Too funny ! Ya that's exactly right! During an election in Canada, the lower house is dissolved therefore there are no elected MP's left until after the election results and are sworn in etc, etc. I have also tried to research this grey area period and found the Canadian government very reluctant to get into details about this. As far as being experts on the US. More people in the world follow the US and there are more people in the US as opposed to Canada. So therefore it is very likely there are more "experts" about US politics than Canadian politics. You really find that funny? WWWTT

WWWTT
This is not China. China actually has a much much more advanced political system than Canada! But that's thread drift so I'll leave it there. WWWTT

No need to argue the point....this area of the forum is about Canadian Politics....except when we get the usual thread drift about what happens in the U.S.A. The OP is clearly about Canada. Bryan
The Prime Minister remains the Prime Minister until the next one takes over. At no point is "no one in charge". In addition, the Crown also always remains. If the Prime Minister is unable to perform his or her duties, the Governor General and/or the Queen can also make decisions (there would have to be a serious crisis for that to happen). As previously mentioned, the House gets dissolved when the writ is dropped, but the Senate does not. The business of the government doesn't stop either. Key Ministers are often still on the job and working on government business during a campaign.
Smallc
Susan Bonner corrected herself and said that Stephen Harper was the Conservative leader and not the Prime Minister. She should have been corrected, but, of course that didn't Happen. Harper remains Prime Minister until such a time as he gives up that position. Bryan
Or until he gets voted out of office. Not even then. Even if a sitting PM loses an election, he/she STILL is the PM. The power is not taken from him, he willingly yields to the will of the people and hands it over.

Only if the PM relinquishes it. He's still the PM until he does so, even if he loses the election. He can even advise the GG that he intends to try to continue to govern anyway.
