Michael Hardner
http://www.nytimes.com/2015/01/18/books/review/among-the-disrupted.html?smid=fb-share&_r=0 Amid the bacchanal of disruption, let us pause to honor the disrupted. The streets of American cities are haunted by the ghosts of bookstores and record stores, which have been destroyed by the greatest thugs in the history of the culture industry. Writers hover between a decent poverty and an indecent one; they are expected to render the fruits of their labors for little and even for nothing, and all the miracles of electronic dissemination somehow do not suffice for compensation, either of the fiscal or the spiritual kind. Everybody talks frantically about media, a second-order subject if ever there was one, as content disappears into “content.” What does the understanding of media contribute to the understanding of life? A long essay lamenting the anti-Humanism of our current age. The "persistence of humanism" as Wieseltier calls it in this piece appears to ignore the industrial revolution, the printing press and all the misery and wars that they caused... right back to the proverbial stick that the 2001: Space Odyssey monkeys used to smash each other. "What does the understanding of media contribute to the understanding of life ?" he asks. I didn't get that. Isn't the whole article about trying to understand the effects of media. Your thoughts ? GostHacked
Nothing wrong with a little levity is there ? The link in the OP is very weighty. I don't come to MLW for levity in forms of 'humour'. I'll go read the funnies for that.
Michael Hardner
Well this is still open for comment. If you don't like the humour, just ignore it.
