eyeball Posted January 8, 2015 Report Posted January 8, 2015 A 4.8 earthquake NE of Tofino at 6:01 PDT. My cats came unglued, they're still sitting around looking up at the ceiling. Quote A government without public oversight is like a nuclear plant without lead shielding.
The_Squid Posted January 8, 2015 Report Posted January 8, 2015 I'm out of province.... missed it! Quote
Derek 2.0 Posted January 8, 2015 Report Posted January 8, 2015 Was driving, didn't feel a thing.......any Tsunami warnings? Quote
eyeball Posted January 8, 2015 Author Report Posted January 8, 2015 A couple of neighbours promptly called. I'd stepped out onto the porch by this time and could hear the folks across the road calling to each other. My wife's Facebook page has lit up with reports from Estevan to Ucluelet and Port Alberni and Comox felt it too. Most accounts including our's are that "it felt like a truck hit the house". eyeball Posted January 8, 2015 Author Report Posted January 8, 2015 No tsunami warnings. It happened inland under Fortune Channel about 10 miles north of Tofino. There are fish farms and the odd float-home up that way. They might have felt some effects alright. Quote A government without public oversight is like a nuclear plant without lead shielding.
Derek 2.0 Posted January 8, 2015 Report Posted January 8, 2015 That's odd, I heard the same, that some felt it as far as the Gulf Islands......asked the wife and she didn't feel it either, and we're closer to Tofino then the Gulf Islands......I guess nobody was hurt is the main thing...... Quote
On Guard for Thee Posted January 8, 2015 Report Posted January 8, 2015 I was downtown Victoria on foot at the time. Didn't feel a thing. Quote
Michael Hardner Posted January 8, 2015 Report Posted January 8, 2015 No tsunami warnings. Curious as to what our MLW on Vancouver Island are required to do in response to Tsunami warnings ? Are there local areas marked as safe that you vacate to ? Quote Click to learn why Climate Change is caused by HUMANS Michael Hardner
eyeball Posted January 8, 2015 Author Report Posted January 8, 2015 Inundation areas have been identified as well as high ground and tsunami evacuation routes are indicated by highway signage. Tofino has big warning sirens. A lot of studying and preparation occurred in the wake of the tsunami in Indonesia 10 years ago. We'll have about 15 minutes to get to high ground in the event of the Big One. If I'm out on a boat I'll be heading for the deepest water I can find. Are there local areas marked as safe that you vacate to ? I'm going to use it as an excuse to head for the top floors of the Parliament buildings. I might find some interesting history to reveal along the way. Well, assuming we don't get washed away, in which case I'll float the more interesting papers in a whiskey bottle, which I reckon are plentiful around the premises. Quote

In the event of a large enough earthquake to create a large Tsunami to put the coastal regions in danger, the Parliament buildings, the Empress and most of the downtown core (built pre 1980s) won't be the safest buildings to be in........head to Mount Tolmie. Are there local areas marked as safe that you vacate to ? More so the Lower Mainland/Greater Vancouver, which doesn't so much have marked areas to vacate to, but areas considered disaster response routes, in which the populace is expected to steer clear of........... In BC the initial response to an Earthquake/Tsunami is the purview of the Provincial Government, but with individual communities responsible for implementing their own response plans.......as such, its best for the individuals/families of BC to ensure they can take care of themselves for several weeks, if not months.
