Boges Posted October 27, 2014 Report Posted October 27, 2014 On election day in Ontario, why can't we have Party politics in Municipal elections? I'm getting flyers from every joe and jane shmo running for council and they all want the same thing. "Better Government" "Keeping Taxes in Check" "Transit". Blah Blah Blah. At least in Federal or Provincial Elections you can pick a team and you know what that team represents. You really have to do some research to figure out what these people stand for beyond the platitudes they present in their literature. Maybe I'm lazy but it would help voter interest. After all municipal elections do effect your everyday life more than the other levels of government. Quote
Michael Hardner Posted October 27, 2014 Report Posted October 27, 2014 Changing the voting system, adding parties, I don't see those as being impactful. A little more direct involvement and engagement with publics would be extremely helpful, IMO. Quote Click to learn why Climate Change is caused by HUMANS Michael Hardner

DFCaper Posted October 28, 2014 Report Posted October 28, 2014 I'm in a rural riding, and on 2 attempts to find out anything about who's running, I only got a list of names and email addresses. The incumbents were male, so I voted for females... It was the lowest information voting I have ever done... Democracy in rural Canada is dying. Previously, I could at least see where the people lived and a paragraph or 2 about where they stand. Our mayor won with 28%. And I feel municipal politics has more of a direct impact on my life than Federal. guyser Posted October 28, 2014 Report Posted October 28, 2014 DFCaper, I understand what you mean. I had some trouble getting info on my cottage area race for Mayor. Not much by way of the internet and all debates were during the week, leaving only retirees and locals attending. What can one do? Well, I can put some of the blame on the Star's big purchase of almost all local dailies incl the Huntsville Forrester, an absolutely horrible website now that the TO Star has taken over. Quote
