MOM made it to Mars orbit....India's low cost orbiter mission is a success. India was able to do this on its first attempt.

The car-sized probe, also known as MOM or Mangalyaan (Hindi for "Mars-Craft"), executed its 24-minute engine burn successfully, the Indian Space Research Organization reported.

Mission controllers in Bangalore applauded the news — which came on a delayed basis because MOM had to emerge from Mars' far side and send the confirming signals across nearly 140 million miles (225 million kilometers) at the speed of light.

"History has been created today," Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared once the confirmation was received. "We have dared to reach out into the unknown, and have achieved the near-impossible."

Critics may wish to point out the "grinding poverty" of millions in India, just like they did for other nations with expensive space programs.

Nice. Now if only they could fund low cost toilets so their illiterate population doesn't have to crap in the streets...

Congratulations to India. Hopefully more and more nations will continue to enter the spacefaring club.

As predicted... Argus is right on cue. Critics chronically fail to realize that the funding spent on space programs is a tiny tiny fraction of government budgets, far too little to make any real impact on poverty, welfare, healthcare, education, etc, while paying huge dividends in terms of technological development, scientific advancement, etc.

BS. Don't tell me billions of dollars wouldn't buy a lot of toilets in India. There's no reason for a nation as poor as India to even have a space program, much less nuclear subs and aircraft carriers. It's a huge waste of money for a nation so filled with poverty.

I'm all for advancement, but don't you think tackling their huge literacy problem might be better? You don't devote money to art when you don't have a wall to put it on.

Nope....Unlike Canada, India lives in a rough neighbourhood and needs to develop certain defense capabilities. Lower poverty levels and threats to a rich country like Canada have not resulted in significant investments in a space program. MOM's insertion into a Mars orbit (on the first attempt) and other significant technical achievements are probably a greater source of national pride than more toilets.

India's Mars mission cost $74 million. That's not billions. That's $0.06 per person in India. Not gonna address poverty.

Subs and aircraft carriers do cost much more, but military spending is a whole other topic of debate.

India is a country that is acutely aware, self conscious even, of its shortcomings, achievements and place in the world.

Congrats to them for their accomplishment.
