How should Parents discipline children

Given the media coverage that has been given regarding the 'switch' that was used in the NFL player disciplining his child, I thought this would make a good topic to discuss.

When my children were growing up, I rarely 'hit them', however I may have spanked them from time to time on the bum. Mostly, I discussed with them how their behaviour would affect me, 'their mother'. They seemed to listen very carefully to those discussions. For example, when my daughter was caught running the train tracks with a friend and was brought home, I told her that I would have been devastated to have a policeman visit me one day and tell me that my daughter was killed by a train while playing on the tracks. She took this talk very seriously and it was far more effective than a switch to the legs and arms. First of all, it drove home to her that she could have died, and secondly, it would have caused me terrible pain.

We discipline children based on what we now know. Does that mean spanks etc should be banned?

The only time I ever really spanked one of my children, that is, more than a (very infrequent) swat on the bum similar to that which you had employed, was when she was caught playing around parked cars on a main road outside the townhouse complex we lived in at the time. That was a pants down six of the best, and she knew what it was for. I've regretted it ever since. I thought I "had" to do it to frighten her off such behaviour, but I could have done as you suggested. That would probably have worked as well.

If I had to start over with kids I probably would not spank them. But that's because I'm in my fifties now and I know better. I don't think I have the right to tell a young parent that physical discipline that stops well short of abuse is no longer an option for them.

Whenever I have spanked, it was more in fear of my losing my child to some danger. I think that those could be forgiven and explained away as long as it wasn't a 'beating'. I think all parents are probably guilty of that fear and strike out before thinking.

I've spanked my kids, but very rarely. I've given them the diapered spank at about 1 YO. A spank and firm language shows your child how you feel about their actions. I don't think I ever had to spank one past about 2ish. After about 2YO, the firm language and the threat of a spank was enough, they kinda got it by then.

The worst kids always...always belong to those parents who say "I never spank" or "we don't believe in saying no" or "we believe in reasoning with our toddler".

The "switch" and use thereof is/was fairly common in the southern United States as a cultural mainstay for disciplining children, and practiced by parents who experienced this form of "spanking". Lots of variations exist, but I think the basic concept stems from the Bible:

Proverbs 13:24 > He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.

I had an aunt from Virginia who would routinely instruct a youthful offender to "go get me a switch to whip your ass". The psychology was brilliant....having to go out and find the very instrument of your own whipping. Some kids would start crying just knowing what was coming.

Years ago in many schools, it was nothing for a nun or teacher to physically discipline a child with rulers, yardsticks (not meter sticks), chalkboard pointers, purpose made paddle boards, shoes, etc., whatever it took to get after that ass. Some people/regions were very keen to get pants pulled down or skirts pulled up to expose the buttocks for a keen beating. This seems absurd now, but was quite acceptable for many generations.

I recall in grade 6 being hit across the palm of my hand with a ruler in front of the entire class because I laughed out loud at a fellow student's joke. Apparently the teacher thought he would make a good example of a petite female student. I was horrified and I still recall it to this day. Not sure what discipline it instilled in me. I am still trying to figure it out. Perhaps it encouraged me to appreciate humour even more.

Corporal punishment in schools evolved into a very formal protocol that included another teacher as a witness to preclude any difficulties over lawsuits. Most parents did not object, but those who did only made things worse for their kids. It became a source of pride to survive an official "swatting" without crying no matter how much it stung one's ass.

Indeed. I did not shed a tear. I was pissed off, even in grade 6. However, there was no other teacher in the classroom.

Spanking is more efficient that way. Would it be better if it was a male being spanked ? I have contributed to this topic..we are all adults here and should be able to switch gears and context quite easily. Another member posted a similar spanking video, and it wasn't even "Made in Canada" like mine...sheesh !

With all that excitement over, we can see that spanking is quite pervasive across many cultures, and that includes parents spanking children. Russia, Japan, China, Singpore, Australia, U.K. ...doesn't really matter. It is a universal behaviour.
