Attawapiskat Evacuation – Again?

Recommended Posts

For the 5th time in 7 years, there have been evacuations taking place from Kashechewan First Nation. This evacuation, involving more than 1,500 residents was completed earlier this week. Most accommodation in Thunder Bay, Cornwall, Kapuskasing and Greenstone, Ontario is filled up.

“Charlie Angus, Attawapiskat’s member of parliament, said Saturday it might be time to relocate the reserve to a less volatile area.”

You figure?

This area appears to be an annual $millions drain on federal finances.

Why do they want to stay there?

Why have these aboriginals not been moved in the past?

To what location could they be moved?

How about using a link when you start a new topic? Has anyone talked to you about forum rules?

Big Guy. Please post links and quotes when you start a topic. You've been reminded of this several times by several different posters.

Still no link? I'm going to start reporting you.

I've got your link right here.

Covering for Big Guys' laziness is not helping. He has a history of presenting opinion posts with no background of any kind. We should not have to do his work for him. If he wants a discussion on his topic, he should do the bare minimum and provide the context behind HIS perspective on the issue. People may have a dissenting view, and may well Google additional sources to further that discussion, but until he properly presents what his opening position actually is, there's no reason to engage the topic.

Big Guy, you have a quote in your opening post, but no reference to where that quote came from. Can you provide more details, please?

From CTV:

I respectfully suggest that you might put a quote into Google for a search. It does not always work but I have used it in the past.

I am sorry if it caused you any confusion. :)

Attawapiskat: Why don't they just leave?

This isolated Cree reserve is unsustainable in the long run yet the people here love their wilderness home deeply.

I was watching some commentary on the continuing problem of flooding on Aboriginal reserves and the enormous costs of yearly or periodic airlifting of residents from the areas and the cost of accommodations in motels for months at a time.

One panelist suggested that perhaps amphibious housing may be the answer. I did some resaerch and found this to be an interesting concept.

A video can be seen at:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1SM6eZ-QuV8

Additional information on different styles can be found by typing in “amphibious housing” into the Google search engine.

While the cost of these homes appears quite high it may be far less than periodically flying thousands of aboriginals out of flooded areas, paying for their accommodations, flying them back again and rebuilding those houses.

The far cheaper method would be relocating aboriginals from flood prone areas.

But that solution seems top evade our federal government.

Are amphibious homes the answer to flooded out aboriginal communities?

Are amphibious homes a viable alternative for people living on flood plains?

Are amphibious homes just the most recent novel and nonsensical idea for habitation?

Right....

:D Right!

Charles, the Prince of Wales, and his wife, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, will tour Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Manitoba May 18-22. The cost to Canadian taxpayers will be over $700,000 - which doesnt include RCMP or other agents tasked with providing security for the royal couple, which will increase the total cost to taxpayers considerably.

You didn't cite that from a reliable source.......reported and ignored....;)
