-1=e^ipi Posted April 30, 2014 Report Posted April 30, 2014 That's because you get the privilege to ignore race because your race doesn't hold you back in Canada. Did you not read my earlier post about 'employment equity' and university scholarships? Quote
Smallc Posted April 30, 2014 Author Report Posted April 30, 2014 (edited) That's because you get the privilege to ignore race because your race doesn't hold you back in Canada. That is the privilege of being white in our society. When people like you call for ignoring race, it tells people of colour to STFU about the discrimination that they face because you're not willing to recognize it.My race holds me back where I live. There's no question about that. Most jobs are, if you're not aboriginal, you need not apply. I didn't grow up under the same circumstances as you, yet I can still ignore race. This discussion isn't about recognizing discrimination faced by minorities, which is far too common, but about racist attitudes and thoughts, which can come from anyone. It's tough watching the native fellow hereabouts take advantage of the opportunities afforded by rights to access natural resources like fish and trees. That's not to say I'm out-rightly prohibited from fishing or logging but the hurdles I would have to overcome, financial and regulatory, make it next to impossible. These guys still have to follow rules but if they feel like gearing up and go make themselves a decent living there's little in the way of obstacles to do so...I suppose if they tried to make the jump to a factory ship crewed with TFW's they'd be faced with the sorts of obstacles I'd be faced with if I tried to do what they're doing on a small scale... Buddy comes in with the catch, his wife delivers it the next day to small stores and restaurants...its a beautiful thing. I certainly don't begrudge them, it's what I'd be doing...was doing, once... Yeah, it's tough sometimes. Quote A government without public oversight is like a nuclear plant without lead shielding.

I'm sure it's very tough for white men in Manitoba where the aboriginal unemployment rate is four times that of non-aboriginals. Quote
Smallc Posted May 1, 2014 Author Report Posted May 1, 2014 (edited) It wasn't tough at all. My point is that we didn't all grow up in your circumstance. Besides, you don't want to fix the problems anyway, you just want to enhance their causes. Edited May 1, 2014 by Smallc Quote
TimG Posted May 1, 2014 Report Posted May 1, 2014 (edited) I'm sure it's very tough for white men in Manitoba where the aboriginal unemployment rate is four times that of non-aboriginals.What if the difference had nothing to do with racism but entirely the result of bad choices made by the individuals in question? You appear to live in a fantasy world where no one is responsible for themselves. They are either a privileged oppressor that needs to be curtailed or a blameless victim that needs help. The real world is more complicated. Edited May 1, 2014 by TimG Quote
jbg Posted May 1, 2014 Report Posted May 1, 2014 So if a bunch of black guys beat up a white guy because they hate white people that's somehow excused by slavery and years of oppression?I agree with you. I believe in neutrality. Racism is racism. Quote Free speech: "You can say what you want, but I don't have to lend you my megaphone." bleeding heart Posted May 1, 2014 Report Posted May 1, 2014 "The real world is more complicated"....like, for example, that "the difference [in unemployment rates] is possibly "entirely the result of bad choices made by the individuals in question." That's not "more complicated"....that's far less complicated than an institutional analysis implied through cybercoma's posts.
