And wishing for the continued survival of vicious dictators to offset the US is, I think, a ridiculous political hope.

They might be right about oil supplies, but I'm pretty sure they have a lot more natural gas reserves. Although, if the radical environmentalists in North America ever let us develop our massive supply of natural gas, Russia would only have Europe to sell to.

Those same excuses were made about the oil exploration and drilling. Enviro nuts and Russia. Oil and gas are finite on this planet. Why can't we move all the way to renewable resources?

That is the real problem. The value put on natural resources by these companies. And they will only move to renewables when the oil/gas runs out and they risk financial losses. That indicates that there is a lot of greed because of the monetary value put on a resource that will run out. But they will take us all to the cleaners in the mean time.

For example, an oil company or natural gas company isn't in the business of renewable energy. However, if you wish to start a renewable energy company, feel free. As for natural gas and oil running out, it's not going to happen anytime soon. There's something like a 100 year supply of both in North America alone. If you wish to see more renewable energy use, make it at the same price or cheaper as current energy production, and we'll all be happy to switch.

Many oil producting countries aren't members of OPEC. Regardless, do you really think a hundred years from now we'll still be using the same technology related to energy use and production? The obvious answer is no.
