Mount St. Helens likely to have small eruption soon, experts warn

Does anyone remember what impact the 1980 Mt St Helen's eruption had on Vancouver, or BC, if any?

I moved here shortly after that and I have heard conflicting accounts.

I lived in the Kootenays at the time of the eruption. I was pretty young but can clearly remember hearing about the eruption and then the next day the ash came. The sky was pretty grey for just over a week and everything was covered in ash. It took a few weeks for all the ash to finally disappear. I don't think there was much long term effects from the eruption. But I can still remember seeing all the devastation on the news. I don't really want to see it again.

I lived in Surrey at the time of the eruption. The impact on the Vancouver was not severe. I do remember grey skies but not more than Vancouver often has. There was no significant ash or anything else that I saw; either in Surrey or downtown Vancouver where my office was.

As playful said, though, I do remember the news and the destruction elsewhere.

There was not much effect from Mount St helens in Vancouver. This newest possible eruption will not be the same or as severe. The earthquake in California is more of a concern. People travelling in Blaine did get their cars covered in ash.

I drove up Mount Ste Helen's about 10 years after the eruption. If I recall correctly, on one side the mountain looked normal, but the other side was simply "gone". For kilometers around, there was devastation - flattened trees and so on.

I also saw where lava had flowed and the shapes and forms were fascinating.

There is no doubt the geology of western North America is younger and more interesting than eastern North America. Here, the most exciting thing is a moraine from glaciers.

BTW, I recall feeling an earthquake in Quebec City once. People laughed and then applauded. But a friend from Bulgaria was terrified knowing how dangerous they can be.

How many hurricanes has Florida had this past year?

Is it four so far?

They say the damage is uncountable.

I'm not saying they deserve it, but with the damage they have caused over the past 4 years, helping to put Bush in the White House, maybe Floridians will count the ballots a little closer, and a little better, this time.

Are you saying that if Gore was president, the Hurricanes wouldn't have hit Florida?

The beaver, which has come to represent Canada as the eagle does the United States and the lion Britain, is a flat-tailed, slow-witted, toothy rodent known to bite off it's own testicles or to stand under its own falling trees.

Stoker....in all likelyhood, because of Bush's policies on the environment/global warming.

MS, this may have been a viable argument if such events have never happened before but the US was hit by 3 hurricanes in less than a month 40 years ago from what I have heard. If the hurricanes were indeed caused by global warming, then I would dearly love to see the evidence.

Mt. St. Helens can definately not be blamed on global warming. But if she blows, she will add to the cause of global warming. Hopefully if she is going to blow, people will heed the warnings and get the heck out of Dodge before they get blasted to pulp this time.

I hardly think the action at Mount St Helens has anything to do with God's message to Bush. If God wants to send him a message; God should hit the White House with a bolt of lightening. Mount St Helen is a volcanic mountain and this is not unusual or unexpected.

Bush has lots to account for but he is innocent regarding Mount St Helens.

Yup, there was quite a bit of ash there and I was surprised being so far away. I had the cover off the BBQ ' and it got a little "eaten".

I think what most Canadians are wondering, is what is Mt St Helen's position on the throne speech??

Yes, I remember that your area got more of the fall out than we did in Vancouver. I think things are not going to be the same devastation this time. It is not uexpected for this to happen. I don't imagine they are allowing anyone to live on the mountain. Hopefully, there won't be the flooding that happened either. It doesn't seem to be a real concern; at least nothing drastic. Of course, the mountain is not as high now, either.

Perhaps Air Force One could dangle George Bush on a rope, over the opening, just to make sure everything is OK down there.

As I suspected, and the reason this thread was started, this is far from over:

Lava Oozes Out of Mount St. Helens

Check out the webcam. you can see IMR on the trail on his way up to the top to see what's inside.
