In a report published yesterday (citing the same study) they said that all the drugs imported into the US from Mexico could fit inside 60 trucks.

The number of trucks that cross over into the US is 5.5million.

0.0000109%

A whole lot of money to nab 1 in 10,000. Sure would like to know the numbers here. Probably a net deficit.

No kidding.

And organized crime is thriving on the illegal drug trade.

Underage youth are 'recruited' as local dealers because their penalties are minimal, if caught.

It's a lifetime trap.

The "war on drugs" is a complete failure.

Time to take the drug trade (and profits) out of the hands of the criminals.

After a decade of being open, there still hasn't been one single fatal overdose at the Vancouver Safe Injection Site. HIV transmission via needles have also decreased significantly in the area.

http://www.vancouversun.com/news/Insite+anniversary+Vancouver+safe+injection+site+celebrates/8939148/story.html

In fact the program has been so successful Health Canada has actually recommended that addicts receive free prescription heroin drawing the irk of the Conservative Hypocrite Government.

And that area has be a no go for police. The drug dealers and whores now have a free area to do business. They want this in ottawa now but they are fighting it. One myth is that needle sharing is the main cause of HIV , well it is not ,it is up there with sharing sex toys, but unprotected sex between men is the number 1. Why are we not spending money on treatment instead of a place where these people can shoot poison into thier systems. This is another backward progressive idea. It does nothing to fix the problem.

Yea...saves money in the long run, crime is down in the area, deaths are down in the area, HIV rates are down in that area....

Perhaps you have some really progressive ideas to achieve more?

Is it oxymoron day?

The drug dealers and whores now have a free area to do business.

You've obviously never seen East Hastings in Van. Its always been a free area for drug dealers and whores to do business.

One myth is that needle sharing is the main cause of HIV

Since when?

Why are we not spending money on treatment instead of a place where these people can shoot poison into thier systems.

They are being offered treatment at the safe injection sites, and the standard treatment outside of the injection sites is exactly that to shoot poison (methadone) into their systems.

You mean the program doesn't stop people from having unprotected sex?

Well, a clear failure, then.

Crimes are down because the cops do not go there guyser , it is hands off for them. Where do yoi think the dealers are going to park themsleves???? The same with the one they want to do in ottawa, and as the chief himself said , they have to have a no go zone for the police. Lets put one beside your house and see what happens. 25 years ago in ottawa, they wanted everybody down town, well they did. Now they want to put these unsafe zones in those neighbour hoods, after years of building it up paying high taxes and money to live there and now bring in these people, say good by to that nice neighbour hood. It is another make work project from the left, that does nothing to fix the problem.

That and not sharing needles is what keeps that rate up. So why does the left keep lying about the real facts when comes to these sites. The money daltons gang has wasted could have built hundreds of treatment centres.

I guess the police chief is a liar. Same as the ottawa police chief that they will also have these no go zones. But then what do they know.

You know as soon as someone steps foot outside the InSite building, the cops can arrest and charge them, right?

By going on what the ottawa chief says,no. The safe zone is a couple of blocks. Safe from police. But how do you help people when you are feeding them herion??? Now in my little town we have methadone sites, go in have a drink and leave .But then that to is a band aid solution because my understanding is there is no flow up on these people, but they to need to be weaned off of that after a little while. How about safe nieghbourhoods instead.

doctors... scientists? What do they know! Harper Conservatives, once again, know better/know more. Ideology trumps science, once again!

Lifesaving Heroin Assisted Treatment Dealt Serious Blow

Earlier today, officials at Health Canada made the decision to approve an application under the Special Access Program’s current regulations to give heroin to heroin users – not to treat an underlying medical condition, but simply to allow them to continue to have access to heroin for their addiction even though other safe treatments for heroin addiction, such as methadone, are available.

This decision is in direct opposition to the government’s anti-drug policy and violates the spirit and intent of the Special Access Program.

I am taking immediate action to protect the integrity of the Special Access Program and ensure this does not happen again.

The Special Access Program was designed to treat unusual cases and medical emergencies; it was not intended as a way to give illicit drugs to drug addicts.

Our policy is to take heroin out of the hands of addicts, not to put it into their arms.

Our Government will continue to invest in drug treatment and prevention programs that work to keep our children and youth off drugs, and will continue to protect Canadian families and communities

an assortment of scientific peer-reviewed studies show that prescription heroin can be a more cost-effective form of treatment for chronic addicts who have not previously responded to other treatments... perhaps the most comprehensive coming from the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction, a meta-study detailing pilot studies in six countries involving 1,500 patients:

Supervised injectable heroin (SIH) treatment has emerged over the last 15 years as a potentially important intensive second-line treatment for entrenched heroin addicts for whom previous orthodox treatments (i.e. oral methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) or residential rehabilitation) have produced little benefit. This treatment, by its very nature, attracts attention and controversy. Therefore, it is particularly important that there is a robust evidence base for its effectiveness and that the research evidence from international trials is brought together in one document and examined alongside the evidence from wider clinical experience in order to provide a complete picture of what we know about this treatment.

We now have the results from a series of well-designed randomised clinical trials, from Europe and Canada, which have been peer reviewed and published in high-impact scientific journals, as well as steadily accumulating clinical experience of the development and provision of supervised injectable heroin treatment.

Macleans - Q&A: on Heroin-Assisted Treatment with Dr. Perry Kendall (provincial health officer for British Columbia):

Q. What makes you a believer in this treatment? Is it the research that’s been done? Is it things you’ve seen firsthand?

A. It’s basically the research that’s been done. There have been a number of trials over the years, starting in Switzerland, follow up trials in Holland, trials in Germany and the NAOMI trials in Canada, which show that for opioid addicts who cannot be treated or are refractory to treatment with the first-line treatment, which is methadone and counselling, that they actually do significantly better on heroin. They have less problems, they use less drugs, they have less engagement with the law and their psychological and physical health improves.

Waldo ,we do not need scientists to tell us that putting poison into your body is not good. This is not good policy. It is just a progressive liberal feel good thingy, and a great job maker for the addiction industry. Just like the poverty industry and the homeless indusrty. Ottawa held another convention on homelessness, flew in over 600 people for it, another feel good convention. How many millions have been wasted by these so call experts over the last 20 years? Could have spent the money alot better and maybe directly to the people instead of weekend junkets for the so called experts.

He says ^ ...all the while turning a blind eye to all the documents that show a positive return, crime, disease , healthwise......all in all shows it to be a success.

Let me ask you, do you ever read before posting or is it alway just emotions and your limited scope on things that you rely on?
