1. I understand the wedge issue idea to win the next election. Maybe it will work.

1a. Montreal is not Quebec.

2. I think also that the cabinet was thinking longer term: how to protect Quebec.

3. I also understand the Lisee subtext of this issue. WTF?

------

But I have a broader question. When Michele Lalonde used this phrase, she spoke to a small minority about a powerful majority on a continent.

So, what is the best way to protect/integrate a minority faced with a broader whole?

Actually, even with the link in English, your post is pretty much nonsense.

August may be alot of things but not "nonsense" even though he tried to get me banned once.

Ok, I think I have a handle on what is meant by "Speak White", but what did Pauline Marois actually do that prompted this thread?

it's a strange somewhat twisted analogy that requires a very long reach to even attempt to apply it... between the pejorative intended 'Speak White' linguistic suppression and the Quebec Charter of Values intended to stifle public sector employees visual display of their religious conviction.

Peter the Great imposed a tax on beards. In the 17th century, he wanted to "modernise" Russia and he chose to impose a cost on supposedly "old-thinking".

The PQ and Pauline Marois are doing something of the same. They are imposing a cost on women who choose to wear a headscarf. But if a Muslim woman is forced to stop wearing a head scarf, does this mean that she's "modern"? "Integrated"? And what of Muslim men?

-----

Several years ago, BlackDog (ever the progressive leftist) posted that traditional Muslims will eventually integrate into Western enlightened society as all other immigrants have. But will they?

Kate at SmallDeadAnimals described this PQ initiative as "Push Back".

-----

IMV, making Quebec Anglophones speak French is one thing; making religious Muslims speak Enlightened Western is something else. And protecting a small minority by restricting a larger majority is one thing; but restricting a small minority is petty, and wasted effort.
