We still believe theres an opportunity to see rates come down, Horwath said after a one-hour meeting, where she expressed concern that rates havent fallen more quickly since benefit payouts were trimmed in 2010 reforms. Ive told the premier what I expect. She knows what I want to see in the budget, added Horwath, who is also pushing for subsidized job training for youth, closing of corporate tax loopholes, among other things. If I dont get what the people of this province deserve in terms of changes that help their problems in this budget, then we will be going to the polls. With the Progressive Conservatives under Tim Hudak promising to vote against the budget, Horwath will be in the drivers seat. The NDPs political calculus will also have to measure whether Wynne who replaced Dalton McGuinty on Feb. 11 is still enjoying a honeymoon with voters, which could lure wavering New Democrat support to the Liberals. I've read the NDP also are going to propose a bill to scrap the ridiculous OLG modernization plan. On the other side the PCs are pushing them to freeze all public sector wages now. NDP doesn't have a good war chest for an election... would be counting on general disgruntled voters switching over. Quote Ideology does not make good policy. Good policy comes from an analysis of options, comparison of options and selection of one option that works best in the current situation. This option is often a compromise between ideologies.
