Perhaps they'll replace it with MMA.

Canada wins medals in Wrestling every Olympics it seems, nevertheless unless a Canadian stands to win a medal I would never watch a wrestling match.

I'd argue MMA is a far more popular sport and far more interesting. Maybe baseball will make a comeback.

Rugby and Golf are being introduced in 2016, both I'm very interested in seeing in the Olympics.

Not that popular for the general public but has always been a staple in the Oly's. I imagine the eastern bloc countries (or formally ) will be disappointed . They used to cash in on those Golds and wrestling was popular over there.

The OIC never has a reason other than money. Secret ballots on this too....the IOC and FIFA , and most other Euro based federations are such whores and grifters.

That's really weird. It's such an old sport.

MMA would be interesting to add, but the ancient Greeks wrestled for sport a well so I can't imagine it not being in the Olympics

Lots of sports have been taken out and added throughout the history of the modern Olympics. Wrestling is just a version of Marshall Arts, Karate is one of the sports applying to be added, that's an ancient sport as well.

MMA would need to have a global governing body. It meets all the requirements of an Olympics sport if it can make set international rules. UFC is the closest to this but that's just an organization within the greater sport.

I hope they make MMA an olympic sport.

I doubt they will. I dont think the IOC wants a bloodsport (and I use that loosely) on its hands. But then again the $$$ might pour in so.....yeah maybe they do.

OK OK , heres why they may not. Boxing in the Oly's uses a helmet (sort of) at least headgear, would MMA wear the same? I doubt it. But then again, I never thought some of the skiing stuff would get in, halfpipe and such.

Wrestling has been there since the word go. Maybe they should go back to the original .....naked and oiled up. Viewership may go up for certain demographics (male) and all demographics and viewership numbers would go through the roof ...female wrestling naked and oiled.

Or Jello.

I was talking to people about this at work. You also need an objective scoring system, which UFC currently doesn't have. You kind of know who wins each round based on take downs, landed punches and kicks and dominance but no scoring system.

But then again you have sports like Diving, Figure Skating, Freestyle Skiing, Gymnastics etc that are all judgement sports that don't use objective standards like time or points to decide the winner, so who knows.

Rugby 7's is coming into the Olympics in 2016. That's a contact sport where there the participants have almost no protection. (Mouth guard and minor headgear to protect the ears are all I can think of)

They need to name MMA what it is. Freestyle Fighting.

Wrestling is more of an olympic sport than synchronized swimming. There is a clear winner with an objective, not subjective, goal.

Ideology does not make good policy. Good policy comes from an analysis of options, comparison of options and selection of one option that works best in the current situation. This option is often a compromise between ideologies.

Women like to watch all those judgement sports. Why else does Figure Skating get Primetime spots every winter Olympics? No one likes to watch Greco-Roman Wrestling. Just sayin'.

Wrestling is no longer an Olympic sport but rhythmic gymnastics is? What a joke!

If it's based on popularity when does pole dancing get included in the Olympics?

But my argument is that wrestling (greco-roman style, or something like it) was one of the original sports from the Ancient Olympic Games in Greece. It has such a long history of being linked to the Olympic games, so it's odd to have it removed.

I think MMA might be too young of a sport, it might need to grow a bit more worldwide. Also, there's problems where in the Olympics fighters would needs to fight several times in a very short period of time. Tournaments like that have been done before in MMA, but injuries in MMA are very frequent (cuts and concussions of course) unlike most sports. Maybe headgear would be needed & fights would be more geared to winning points over knockouts, but that changes the sport dramatically. Not sure the IOC would want broken arms in the Olympics either.

Is Pole Dancing a competitive sport?

Yes, there are actually poll dance 'competitions', with actual scoring.

From: http://www.nydailynews.com/life-style/pole-dancing-recognized-sport-headed-olympics-article-1.198909

The strip club mainstay pole dancing - known as much for its sensual moves as its rigorous athletic side - may be headed for the Olympics. A group of pole-dance advocates is hoping for a "test" event in 2012 and a more formal pitch four years after that, in Rio de Janeiro, according to The Associated Press.

From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pole_dance#Pole_dance_competitions

A wide range of amateur and professional competitions are held in many countries around the world. They are strictly non-nude and focus on pole dance as an athletic and artistic form of dance and fitness....A group of advocates are even pushing for pole dance to be represented as a test event in the 2012 London Olympics. But because this is a relatively new trend, scoring for competitions is not standardized, while names of the techniques vary among different clubs in different regions.

There's a great line from Ryan Gosling in the movie Crazy, Stupid, Love.

“The war between the sexes is over. We won the second women started doing pole dancing for exercise.”
