I think if you listen to the whole quotation, Mitt Romney explained that he likes to be able to fire people because he needs to be able to manage his workforce efficiently and effectively, not because he's on a power trip.

But the Republicans have based their whole campaign on disingenuous, cherry-picked lines. The success of their recent convention can be attributed to its prominent, repeated reference to Obama's "you-didn't'build-that-roads-and-bridges" mess.

Now, in a desperate attempt to distract people from the fact that Mitt thinks half the country, including sick people and seniors with pensions, are victims with no sense of personal responsibility, they're pushing a 1998 quote of Obama saying he favours "redistribution." Naturally, they edited out the parts where he talks about competition and the marketplace. That would be off-message.

But isn't the American dream, to some extent, derived from redistribution? The public school system, public infrastructure, public security, social security, etc. are all based on the concept of redistribution. Are seniors who receive social security and medicare completely oblivious to this? Are they serious that they want to go back to a wild-west system of anarchy where it is everyone for themselves?

Or is it just the GOP hoping people think "redistribution" means "socialism" and don't think about it any further?

It's not just GOP people. 'Gotcha' tactics like this are brilliantly useful at influencing the idiots who won't put more than 30 seconds of critical thinking or research into their election decision. To them, redistribution = socialism = communism = the end of freedom and the collapse of Amurrica as they know it.

there is no taking the Mitt Romney '47% quotes' out of context... the context speaks for itself. Highlighting 'sick people and seniors with pensions' is simply a factual associative statement of persons that position within the Mitt's 47% American entitlement society... along with working low-income Americans, along with U.S. veterans, along with lower-income Americans earning less than $50K, along with recent 'victims' of the recession, etc.. Yes, the Mitt Romney 47% American entitlement society is huuuge! If only they could just get jobs, damnit!!!

See the first example I cited. Nevertheless, quoting out of context has become the centrepiece of the GOP campaign. It was the basis of their convention, for god's sake.

I didn't add anyone; I identified them. Do you really believe the "47%" who don't pay net federal income taxes does not include senior citizens and sick people?

There isn't a modern economy around that doesn't practice redistribution, and the country would quickly fall apart if it didn't. Americans are just dumb, blinded by their myths. That's where keep your govt hands off my medicare comes from, and that guy in the Bill Maher video saying he doesn't like the govt cause it never did anything for him, but he does take food stamps because he's entitled to them.
