Uh, it's a rumour.

When it happens for real then, whatever, I upgrade my headphones which is fine. Shrug.

Because whatever Apple does is fine with me.

Got knows we all need thinner phones.

Then don't buy Apple.

Buy Samsung and keep your old headphones.

Doesn't bother me so why does it bother you how I choose to spend my money on things I want?

You're not some kind of anti-Apple Mullah, are you?

It's fun that way. Minding my own business on the internet is no fun, especially on a message board.

I'm just interested to see how people will continue to get options taken way from them so Apple can continue to capitalize on profit.

So now using an earphone jack is loserville? What if you want to charge your phone while listening to music?

It's called wireless earphones.

So none of this matters anyway.

Not really interested in, yet another thing, I have to charge. I keep a nice set of (wired) Bose headphones in my Gym bag for when I work out. It'd be annoying to have to constantly check the charge of your headphones.

I think that's the top reason smart watches aren't widely adopted. None have been created that can last more than a day or 2 without charging.

I'm home after my long day. Now I have to charge my phone, watch AND headphone. Good times!

Well, you're a guy who can't even trim posts so I'm not surprised that this is a burden for you.

I seem to have enough electrical outlets in my house to have no problems while charging my iPhone, iPad, watch and laptop.

It's all personal preference. Is having wired earphones such a huge inconvenience? Having universal outlets on all your devices to listen to music is the true measure of convenience. Ditto with having chargers where I can charge my laptop and phone. My ASUS hybrid computer also uses micro USB like every other smartphone except Apple.

I'm listening to the radio on my (Apple) work computer, I can take those headphones off my computer and listen to music if I want to go for a walk on lunch. Pretty convenient.

Just don't believe for a second that Apple doesn't see the benefit of having an earphone jack on their phone. They're all about forcing people to use only things they sell and can capitalize on. The benefit is to the company and not the customer here.

If it was to happen.

You mean business is in business to make money?

Well if people don't find it handy then Apple won't make the money.

Just like the complaints when they went to the Lightning jack: shrug.

Which is why the article says it's a huge gamble for Apple to try this. Perhaps they won't.

It is hilarious that making the phone a millimetre thinner is the main driving force behind the move. As if people wants phones that are smaller nowadays.

It is a rumour. But rumours about the new iPhone is nothing new.

1) why does anyone need a micro usb? There is this thing called the "cloud." I haven't used a micro usb since I gave up my Blackberry back in the olden days.

2) As for portability of music: I only use Spotify on my iPhone. Get home, it hooks up to the stereo automatically. Plugs into the car automatically, etc etc.

This living in the 21st century gig is pretty easy compared to my days with the Sony Walkman and making mixed tapes.

I can see uses for thinner phones. They could become flexible so you could roll them up or crunch them into shapes that fit into your car etc....

Women may prefer thinner phones that are flexible and can fit into a variety of different handbags and clutch purses.

So why not?

I have no problem with it: I will have my wireless set for exercise and my over the ear set for travel. Haven't bought new headphones in years so it's time for an upgrade anyway.

You're right I never hook my phone up to my PC anymore, doesn't mean it's not nice to be able to if I want.

2) I use Spotify as well. Not sure what this has to do with hardware options. I also use a Bluetooth speaker when I get home. OR I can use a Chromecast if I want.

Fine but smaller phones is not where the market is going. Every successive phone I've gotten has gotten bigger actually. (Apple makes bigger phones now too)

I actually got the LG G4 instead of the Samsung S6 because it's got a really nice 5.5" screen. And I make the phone even larger by protecting it with an Otter Box.

Well

To be fair, even Apple is jumping on the USB C bandwagon.

So if the headphones are USB C...and you could use them with every other phone / computer / new stereo...Since it would also provide auxillary power, you could have light up and noise cancelling without batteries...etc.etc..

Ever heard of Firewire? Didn't think so.

Bigger screen but often smaller in other ways - as in thinner. My 6 is both lighter and thinner than my 4s.

I protect my phone in a Pad & Quill case that has wood. Everyone who sees it has to touch my wood and I always tell them that they "are touching my wood."

But my wife has a smaller case for hers. She likes the big screen but otherwise smaller is better (which is why she married me :o ).

But then that's why she likes the watch - leaves her phone in her purse and still gets any important notifications without having to fumble through the purse. In fact, she wishes the watch (38mm) was smaller.

When you keep buying Apple products having cords really is not an issue. We have multiple cords with a spare in the car.

As for anyone setting foot in my house with an Android/BB/MS phone without a cord - that's their problem. I would not expect to go to someone's place and be able to charge my phone although most of my friends have the good sense to own Apple products (we Apple people tend to flock together in groups afterall  ).

I've travelled to third world countries with an iphone and ipad and have had very few problems with battery life, charging, etc... so I really just do not get this fascination you have with Apple, cords, battery, etc.

It is a non-issue.

There's a reason Apple adapters and things are so expensive. They actually make them right and well. http://www.righto.com/2015/11/macbook-charger-teardown-surprising.html

More complicated =/= better. The most efficient and reliable component of any device is the one that isn't there.

That's not to say that the Apple product isn't higher quality than the generic one, it probably is, but the author's argument that since there are more parts it's therefore better is nonsense.

So Apple can brick your phone if you go to a 3rd party to repair a problem. Lovely company!

http://www.thestar.com/business/2016/02/10/apple-courts-touchy-controversy-with-error-53.html

That’s one of the questions surrounding Apple’s smartphones after a growing number of people have reported their devices being made unusable — accompanied by an “Error 53” message — after having them fixed by a third-party repair shop.

Thousands of consumers have reportedly been affected by this error message, according to the Guardian, which has sparked talk of lawsuits against the computer giant.

Apple said in a statement that this error stems from a security feature of iOS9, related to its Touch ID fingerprint scanner in the Home button of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S models. “This security measure is necessary to protect your device and prevent a fraudulent Touch ID sensor from being used. If a customer encounters Error 53, we encourage them to contact Apple Support,” the company said in a statement.

This is a feature: if the trusted pathway is breached then it should break. That's the point.

if one is concerned about cost then buy a cheap android phone and let whoever do whatever they want to it.

I agree...my cheap Android phone costs about $8 a month for data/text/voice and it is easy to root. Does everything I would want an iPhone to do plus has more extended memory.

Economics trumps Virtue.

Here is an interesting case where the FBI has received an order to force Apple to help hack an iPhone: http://www.wired.com/2016/02/magistrate-orders-apple-to-help-fbi-hack-phone-of-san-bernardino-shooter/

Not directly related to the above story about error 53 above but certainly is interesting on many levels.

I admit I just assumed the FBI would be able to hack any phone without the need for this type of order.

Don't know how I feel about this government intrusion as that is a topic for another thread.

But it does give me comfort to know that even a well funded agency must go to these lengths to get into a phone so I will live with the possibility of overpaying for repairs to my phone.... if it prevents the wife from seeing my collection of ... Valentine's day pictures with cucumbers in them.
