Apple's lawsuit brigade has nothing to do with whether "Apple Fan Boys" are justified in their love of the product. It's a matter of preference. For me personally, iThings seem a bit expensive for my needs, but there is no doubt that Apple builds durable, quality machines. May be overpriced, but if people feel it is worth it to them to pay that price, well that's their business.

Sure but you can't deny there's a faction of the clientele that believe owning an Apple product is a status symbol.

Like this dude.

http://americandigest.org/pb-120316-ipad-celebrate-ps.jpg

Now I'm sure people that act like this are few and far between. But just like mocking Teaparty members it's a faction of a group that act so ridiculous that mockery is inevitable.

I believe the Apple lawsuit is a result of Apple thinking that their base would continue to bring them lofty profits but another player has done what they do but do it better.

Apple seems to care since they're currently in suing Samsung because they believe the Galaxy devices are ripped off. They say, they have a similar shape and have similar touch screen gestures as the iProducts.

Android has 59% market share and Samsung is the world's largest mobile phone maker so they're beating Apple at their own game. If you can't win . . . SUE!!!

There is more to business than market share.

Profit margin is my preference which is why instead of doing 2,000 tax returns every year I do substantially less (but at higher prices). I'm no H&R Block and I love my job (but I do it for the money)

Apple and Android have different business models.

And that is a good thing for all of us because it means that you get what you want and I get what I want.

And then wankers complain about me wasting my money.

I started a thread about it with little interest.

Yeah, I saw that but don't know enough about patent law to really care.

To the extent that one company can slow/stop sales of the other company in various countries around the world then I guess it works (for that company).

To the extent that patent law is actually being violated and this is stopped then that may be a good thing.

But, once again, beyond my caring.

Also I, like other Android users, find Apple Fan boys amusing and like to comment on them. The people that say they can't wait for the iPhone 5 when nothing proposed on the phone is terribly innovative or original is actually quite interesting.

That's funny because I find AAFF's to be amusing too (anti-Apple Fanboi fanboys).

You probably aren't one of those people. Why do you feel the need to defend them?

I'm not defending them.

Believe it or not but I'm a print graphic designer too. I use both platforms almost daily. I'm probably more informed than most at the difference between Windows and Mac.

And the truth is, it's not that much. File management is nicer on a Mac but so what? The truth is the most important thing is the software you're using. For example Adobe Creative Suite.

I'll take the word of my wife who uses CS daily for graphics and web purposes over some anonymous AAFF anyday. :D

But for a vast majority of people that use computers for personal use, the advantages aren't worth the increased price.

I agree.

But to each their own.

Tablets are useful, no question. Some of my best friends have actually switched from Blackberry and purchased a Galaxy Note. Which is an Android phone with a 5.5" screen and a stylus. They're known as Fablets.

Yes, I've see the phablets (I prefer the "ph").

Too big for my pocket and I don't always have my gay Apple murse you know. :D

Can't argue with that. The whole thing is pretty funny sometimes. Geek cults. In the Linux community there are some people who are quite snobby about how Linux is better, or certain distros are better, and in some cases those (like myself) who use the more user-friendly distros like "Crapbuntu" (as some would call it) are somehow less 'nix, and using "windoze" is sacriledge. At the end of the day, as Cybercoma said, you just want what works for you.

That's a lie. Go around any high school and see all of the iGarbage with broken screens.

They've been sued for selling their shoddy wares at higher prices in the past.

Quality can be subjective but, they stop supporting all of their hardware/software after 4 years. With their latest virus outbreak, they don't support the hundreds of thousands of people using older OSX to fix the security hole. That IS NOT QUALITY.

My wife's old iBook is a good example. 3 years of after purchase, a web browser couldn't be found for it to browse properly. I had to install linux on the damned thing to browse the web because "You need to install the new OSX" -> "You hardware isn't compatible with the new OSX".

People will get tired of having to be good iZombies and buy new iGarbage every 3 years because the updates slow down older hardware (IMO - purposefully engineered to happen by Apple for planned obsolescence) and Apple shares will fall. Their premium prices are unsustainable in the mass market. It's as simple as that.

See this is rational.

I've never met a rational Apple fan who would actually browse for best value/high ratings. They just go to the Apple Chapel and hear what the preachers have to say about the new product as they pay for it.

Yes what he said was rational.

Interestingly, Boges states that his Galaxy S3 is way better than an iPhone 4s.

Yet it seems to compare about the same when both devices are actually used as compared to looking at the hardware specs.

But I'm sure CNET et al. are all a bunch of Apple fanbois.

I never stood in line for the i4s so not sure what your point is.

I do like Samsung though. My first cell phone was a Samsung and it did do phone calls very well.

But who makes phone calls anymore?

Of course, where I live the bigger problem seems to be if you are on Telus or Rogers. Depending on where you go one or the other is better (Bell is not a factor).

The wife was on Rogers and I was on Telus until I switched over to Rogers when I changed from BB to the i4s. Rogers seems to have the better coverage for where we live and go to on a regular basis.

I like my iPhone because it just works. I've used them for a couple years now and it does everything that I need it to do without the hassle of compatibility issues that you get with Android apps and software.

I seriously don't understand your completely irrational hate for their products. They work and they work well. They're not as flexible as the Android machines. That's absolutely true. However, I have no need for that kind of flexibility in my phone. Now that I'm used to the iOS format, it's hard to switch to something completely new and get used to the device all over again.

I thought for a long time about what phone I was going to get. I waffled between the Nexus and iPhone for a long time. Finally, after playing with both many times on store displays and ones that my friends owned, I decided to go with the iPhone. I went with it for the simple reason that it just works better and there are less finnicky problems you have to deal with. Also there are simply a lot more third-party accessories for the device too, although that's beginning to change now.

Frankly, I don't think either iOS or Android are better than the other. They're just different. I also maintain the same about Windows and Mac (OS/X?). They're simply different means of achieving the same end. One's more flexible than the other. If you have no need for that flexibility, then why not go with the simpler more straightforward product that gets the job done without all the headaches?

Samsung seems to have the best receivers (antennas) in their phones. I'll give them that. I used to buy Samsung phones exclusively before we got into this smartphone business. Then I bought a Nokia that wasn't a smartphone (fantastic phone, but they dropped the ball on the OS war). Now I'm using an iPhone.

What we need is real competition in OSes. We do not want a repeat of the desktop situation where one company had a lock on the desktop market. That is why I think these Apple patent lawsuits should be tossed out.

Apple is fighting a losing battle. Other manufacturers will make smartphones, and key features of those smartphones such as touchscreens which work in comparable ways will continue to proliferate.

As for real competition in OSes, I'm all for it, as long as there is some standardization as well. Excessive fragmentation of the smartphone OS market without any cross-compatibility standards would be a nightmare for users and developers alike.

I agree. But two or three ecosystems with equal market share would be something developers can handle. Right now Apple is really abusing its market position and screwing over developers by forcing them to use the Apple Store to distribute their products. So I think developers would be overjoyed to have at least two vehicles for distributing their products. Edited by TimG

Well, Android has more market share than Apple, and will continue to have substantial market share whatever the outcome of the Samsung lawsuit is (other manufacturers like Motorola and HTC also make Android smartphones). Windows phones are another viable alternative, as well.

As for Apple, they are making a business decision to have a closed ecosystem. That decision has both advantages and disadvantages, and Apple's continued success in this marketspace will depend in part on the merits of that particular decision.

Actually the lawsuits have the potential of killing the Android market since margins are very thin on these devices (i.e. many maker may exit the market if they have to pay billions to Apple in fee). Samsung is doing well only because they also manufacture many of the critical components. Microsoft can probably hold its own but it is vaporware until the fall.

Generally I agree. I think these kinds of lawsuits are BS. There's a part of me however that thinks if Apple put in the time researching and developing the motion controls on the touch screens (and whatever else they're suing about) and patented them, then the return on their investment ought to be legally protected.

That's why Android has been so strong over the last year, I'm sure. Open source is the way to go. Cornering developers is never good for a product.

That's why the PS3 took so long to take off. The hardware was far superior to the XBOX360, but the codebooks for the developers were all in Japanese. Because of this, certain functions of the hardware went completely untapped by third-party developers for at least 2-3 years. Sony is notorious for doing crazy stuff like that. When it pays off, it pays off big (see: blu-ray), but when it doesn't they screw themselves just as big (see: betamax).

Apple cornered people into their products with no cross-compatibility. Now that there's an open-source solution on the market that allows people to use their apps on different manufacturers' phones, more people will switch over for compatibility reasons alone.

On the otherhand, I'm completely satisfied with my iPhone, so I don't care to switch over. They would have to do something monumental with their product. It would have to be a game-changer in order to really put the nail in Apple's coffin. Otherwise people will just stick with what they like best.

Speaking of which, this is what BB10 faces in the new year. If it doesn't change the cellphone market, they're done. They need something that's so huge that people have to drop their current phones for it. I just don't see that happening with them. They seem to be entirely clueless about what the market wants or even creating those wants.

No where in that comparison does it mention, RAM, or Speed. Also they're comparing a phone with 64 gigs of space? With cloud computing who needs 64 gigs?

You going to buy a phone looking for pixel density and the fact it's smaller (also with a smaller screen) and has a camera button? Or the fact that the App store has 25,000 more apps. (400,000 vs 425,000)

By all objective standards the GS3 is a better phone.

Google Play is a really nice marketplace.

One of the coolest things about it is that it links to your Gmail account. So if you have the same Gmail address registered with your phone. (You need a Gmail address to have an Android Phone)

If you're on a desktop computer (any computer you don't need an iTunes like program loaded) you can find an app and buy it and it'll download to your phone automatically.

That's not a game-changer but it's a nice feature.

Also the fact that with Kies Air you don't need to sync your phone with iTunes, you just need a Wifi connection.

The fact that you need to Sych your iProduct with iTunes is a massive pain in dealing with Apple products.

I recently read a review of a Samsung tablet (iirc) and the guy went on about how Samsung is finally getting it.

It isn't about the extra cores and Ghz that and GB this.

It's about how a person uses the product. And, in his review, he thinks Samsung has finally made it there (well, almost).

Unfortunately I can't find the link right now but it was a nice article because that's exactly it.

And people like you just don't get it.

The specs are meaningless to me because the i4s and the iPad do what I want them to do.

I have never had any reason to complain about the load time for anything so why would I care about the specs if that isn't a factor? Nor has memory ever been a factor. Yet, I'm supposed to be all outraged because I can't expand my memory with a microSD.

This is what I mean about what the BFD is.

I like something different from you and for which cannot be explained over a forum and without going through a comparison by actually using the two products.

At the end of the day you prefer your Samsung. Congratulations! Good for you.

I prefer iOS.

So I like something different than you. BFD.

Why do I have to be made into some Android sheep?

Why do you and MCC feel so compelled to herd Apple users into the Android system?

Do you still not understand that competition between systems (especially between open and closed systems) is good for all of us?

That means that you get what you want and I get what I want?

I used to think this too. In fact, that's part of the reason it took me so long to go over to Apple.

Then I started using iTunes and find it to be no problem whatsoever.

How hard is it to click on an icon, hook up your i4s, iPad, and iPod, and sync?

It isn't.

Oh, and I can do it using the wifi sync too.

Not to say that it is better than Google Play - I have no idea since I've never used that.

Well you sorta goaded me into it by providing those two links. I can provide several head to head reviews that have the GS3 and the GS2 for that matter to be better phones than the iPhone 4S. There are some objective standards used to rate smartphones above and beyond the feel of the OS.

Again I'm not attacking you personally for your choices to buy an apple product. But for someone, again not you! to say Apple just makes better products period, speaks to a kind of elitism that I find objectionable. People that use Apple products have that reputation.
