Finally, a law none can possibly object to!

Easy solution: police snipers. No problem picking out people with masks from people without masks when you are looking at them through a rifle scope

Well, while destructive/violent protesters do need to be arrested and punished, they don't necessarily warrant the death penalty. :)

Not sure if they do this already, but they should at least have to wear clearly legible ID numbers on their uniforms so they can be identified (if they are wearing riot gear that covers their face).

hmmm ... so if the police are rioting with their faces covered, they go to jail? :)

I'm good with that!!! :D

As for the new Harper law ... bunch of crap!

There already is a law saying it's an additional offense to cover your face while committing a crime.

A bandana and pouch of vinegar are necessary to protect yourself from tear gas when the police are rioting.

What Harper's trying to do is make it illegal to defend yourself from tear gas during police riots.

That should put a stop to any peaceful protesting in Canada! <_<

Here's how it goes in the new Harper world:

Police provocateurs throw something.

Police declare the protest an "illegal assembly".

Police fire tear gas into the crowd.

Anyone who covers their face to protect themselves from the effects of the tear gas is arrested and gets five years in jail.

The man is f#@!!ng insane ... and dangerous!

Can be difficult through the clouds of smoke and tear gas that people are covering their face to protect themselves from, but what the hell, eh?

Just shoot into the crowd IN CASE some of them are covering their faces, right fellow traveller?

Nobody should be on the street anyway, right fellowtraveller?

Ya Harper has a few dangerously insane slavies hanging out here. <_<

I think the point of the law is to make it easier to identify the "black bloc" protesters and others who turn non-violent events into orgies of destruction. These individuals need to be able to be caught and punished, without having to blanket arrest everyone at a demonstration.

That being said, I expect the proposed law will have very limited effectiveness.

Look, I GET that the police are humiliated that they can't catch blacbloc protesters.

But that's their problem and has NOTHING to do with the rest of the protesters.

THAT DOESN'T make the rest of us criminals!

Except that now we are.

We'll ALL be covering our faces now.

And we'll see what the Supreme Court has to say about it.

Hopefully before Harper shuts it down too.

Make no mistake: This is part of Harper's plan to disrupt democracy in Canada.

This law is just another sign that the conservatives are getting very worried about the strength of their core support!

This law from what I have read so far is full of so many flaws. The only thing that can explain it is that they are going for the drama their core is craving.

Concealing your identity is not evidence of criminal activity!

Not to mention religious face coverings and other possible constitutional rights.

what if they abandon the masks and wear clown makeup instead? then, will they outlaw clown makeup as well?

I remember people wearing clown masks at a protest... they were of Brian Mulroney...

Oh, wait, I also saw Joe Clark, Jean Chretien, .. no Paul Martin masks that I am aware of... and I am sure there are some Steve Harper masks but I have never seen one.

I just realized how rediculous this is getting.

I dont see why protesters should have less right to conceal their identity than anyone else. My guess is this gets struck down by the courts.

I question things because I am human. And call no one my father who's no closer than a stranger

What a stupid thing to say. Even if you're 'kidding' it's still pretty appalling considering this has actually happened in other countries over the last year and a half.

Only if the cops wear identification and not hide behind riot gear that conceals their identity.

Excellent point, gentlemen.

It seems to me that during the G20 fiasco, a number of police officers deliberately concealed their badge numbers to (presumably) avoid punishment for stepping over the line of appropriate police behavior.

If protesters are going to be punished for concealing their ID, the police better damned well be held to the same standard.

They're required to.

And I will never believe that over 100 officers 'spontaneously' removed their badge numbers. I want to know who gave those orders.

Five years in jail is about right for that!

But it's ridiculous for protesters.

Harper's about to find out that push gets pushback.

I know what to get you for Christmas: a down payment on a sense of humour. Is that a lefty thing or just you personally? Are you one of those Bible literalists too?

Or are you just smarting from your last smackdown here?

The government should do something.

Rubber bullets perhaps?

Gee I guess they already got your message cos they've been doing that for weeks <_<

Ya my sense of humour doesn't extend to jokes about shooting young people when two are in hospital with serious injuries ... or ever.

As much as I find some people's views offensive, it would never occur to me to wish them dead. That's a kind of karma I'll leave to sickos like you.

Smackdown? You mean the pedophile creep? Now that's a kind of karma I can deal with. :D

If we had the kinds of things happening here that have actually happened in other countries over the last year and a half (that is, trying to violently overthrow the government), then I would wholeheartedly support our government shooting those protesters. I'd volunteer to do it.

You and fellowtraveller and your hero Anders Behrens Breivik. Isn't that just special.

Not to worry ... I'm sure he police will learn of your 'offer' to mass murder students. Perhaps they'll be in touch.

So tell us more ... ? :lol::P

Assad will appreciate your support. Qadaffy appreciates you sending regrets.

And what the heck, lets put back up the Berlin Wall while we at it.

So, for the record, we have Brian and fellowtraveller here supporting the shooting of unarmed protesters.

It's a point of view, I guess. My take on it is that MLW allows opinions to be expressed, even certain extreme opinions. However, I doubt that this people are serious. Even so, if they want to retract this ridiculous position, now would be a good time.

If not, then I think it would be easy for other posters to poke holes in their arguments with assertions like this out there. A quick search gives an example:

We are a compassionate people... and this:

Easy solution: police snipers. No problem picking out people with masks from people without masks when you are looking at them through a rifle scope

See what I mean ?

Only one? Aww darn! And I was hoping to play the 'conspiracy' card! :)

"Conspiracy to ..." is a verbal criminal offence and is not free speech but illegal speech.

'Offering to'...( threatening?) ... certainly illegal against an individual, against a group I'm not so sure whether it's free speech or criminal ... but it's not my problem to sort that out.

Comrade, I hope you have done your civic duty and forwarded names and IP addresses to the authorities so they may deal with these traitors of the state. They do not deserve the freedom of speech earned for them by hooded protestors.

Don't worry, I'm sure Vic Toews and his SS have been monitoring this site for any signs of political dissidents and your loyalty and support of his fascist right wing state will be rewarded.

Joseph McCarthy would be pleased...

“This is all about who you represent,” Mr. Dewar (NDP) said. “We’re (NDP) talking about representing the interests of working people and everyday Canadians and they [the Conservatives] are about representing the fund managers who come in and fleece our companies and our country.
