Harper’s brand hits ‘new low’ amid robo-call, F-35 scandals: poll

The numerous clouds looming over the Conservative government have caused many Canadians who thought highly of Prime Minister Stephen Harper two months ago to question his competence, his trustworthiness and his vision for Canada, a new poll suggests. Mr. Harper still edged out NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair – and easily outdistanced Interim Liberal Leader Bob Rae - in the leadership index portion of a telephone survey conducted by Nanos Research between April 13 and April 18.

But Mr. Mulcair, who took the reins of his Official Opposition party on March 24, is nipping at the Prime Minister’s heels when it comes voter perceptions of federal political leaders. And Mr. Harper has taken a dramatic fall since February.

When Canadians were asked two months ago to name the federal leader they believed to be the most competent, 38.1 per cent said Mr. Harper. In the latest poll, that score dropped to 24.2 per cent When asked which leader they trust, 31.7 per cent said Mr. Harper in February compared to just 20 per cent in April And, in terms of who Canadians believe has the best vision for country, the Prime Minister’s numbers fell by a similar amount.

...

Large numbers of respondents said they were undecided or would choose none of the current party leaders when asked to choose who was the most trustworthy competent and had the best vision for Canada“.

It takes some time for scandals to percolate through the public consciousness but it's starting to show in the numbers now.

The election fraud scandal is dangerous to Harper because the investigation will continue for some time and erupt now and then. It will certainly be an issue during the next election so he and his political staff will have to be squeaky clean. And speaking of squeakers ... Harper just barely squeaked out the (heavily targeted) votes for his majority this time, so I think it's highly doubtful he can swing that again without the dirty tricks (ie, without fraud).

Thomas Mulcair is looking good, by the numbers and in the House.

Harper: "In 1939 the NDP wouldn't even support going to war against Hitler!"

(Whispers ... Sir there was no NDP in 1939.")

Harper: "Well then the CCF ... same thing."

Mulcair: "Then I'll have to talk to you about Reform Party policies some time."

:D

Wouldn't it be nice to have a chance to see what it would be like to have a government without ties and obligations to big business/big money?

It really is time to blow the cobwebs (and bats and spiders) out of the Hill, imo.

The next election just may be the most interesting one ever in Canada.

i know i just got slapped for starting a thread on a topic that already exists.. but i am going to suggest that we already a practice of posting polls in a polling thread. THere can be 3 or 4 polls released in a week and a thread for each one is silly.

I do see that you created a MLW poll as well.... just saying..

Are you serious? You would vote for a party that have been charged with contempt of parliament, has MP's scamming money from taxpayers and you, trying to bribe a MP for his vote, was charged and found guilty of the in and out scam, has the largest deficit in history and the list could go on and on. so are you voting party line no matter what, or you really think they are doing a good job??

I have ONLY voted Tory one time and that was the last election.. YES, I really like what they are doing...

The Contempt "charge" was simply that, a charge by the Liberals and NDP shaking in thier booties over the massive loss in the election.. And Scamming MOney?? What was that Liberal thing called coming from QC??? Sponsor-something??? In the billions?? The Liberal mode of opperation wasmade very clear to me, Its seen in Dalton McGuinty as well.. Died in the wool con-artists..

And the "debt"??? Was it the NDP and Liberals that threatened to pull down the gov if the Harper Gov DIDNT put in place a "spending" budget? Get your head out of your Liberal ass... At least im not brain-washed by papers like the "Star" and Liberal media such as the CBC....

In political politics either Federal or provincial, I can vote accross the board and I have for 20 years (PC and Liberal) and Im not stuck on one party.... BUT,, Till i see any real issue with what the Tories are doing (without falling for leftist hype in the media), Im sticking with the Tories...

Topaz is the forum's most zealous Liberal hack Fletch. You'll soon learn to ignore him, other than for the sake of mockery. Welcome to mapleleafweb.

The federal Conservatives have a horrible record thus far, none of the other parties have anything better to offer Canadians though.

Bang on.

Actually, thats not quite accurate.

Prior to you voting Conservative.... the Conservatives had wiped out the Budget Surplus, exhausted the Employment Insurance Surplus, giving away the last 8 Billion in 2 short years.... then called an unnecessary election in 2008 upon which they had never lost a single vote in parliment, were never once opposed by the Liberals and the liberal never asked for anything in return for their support. This was not good enough for Harper.. he decided to call an election breaking his own elections promise that was enacted. His government was not brought down...He tore it down..

Shortly after shrewdly winning that election, yet losing at the same time, can't believe Dion did as well as he did, and wasting another $300 million on an election... he decided to govern like Joe Clark.

Moving forward with a non economic agenda, a Tax Cut and Spend agenda, along with some pet Conservative Projects, including stuffing the Senate full of party hacks.

The Coalition threaten to Govern, which is not to "pull the government down", but to govern with the majority of seats, something the CPC failed to have and choose "at that time" to work with no one and hope someone bent over.

It was the internal coup to replace Dion that saved Harpers bacon.

Ignatieff put the CPC on "Probation" which means ... SFA... as he supported the direction of the Harper government and his only concern was that HE wanted to be Prime Minister and thats about all.

The first time Harper had to actually put money into a program was when Ignatief, Sick of the NDP always voting no.. wanted to box the NDP in and force an Election on his terms. Not expecting the NDP to vote yes to anything, they were shocked to see that Harper met with Layton and Put back $300 million per yer into the EI fund over 3 years.... that the Conservatives had previously put towards corporate tax cuts. This is seriously a drop in the bucket to what was diverted from the payments of Employers and Employees.

Ignatieff then went back to supporting the government carte blanche. Any decisions Harper Made.. Harper Made.... with a take it or leave it attitude and ironically it was the Liberals charging that Harper was spending money like a drunken sailor, while running up the deficit to record levels. But Afraid to lose an election the LPC continued to support the CPC.

When Iggy decided to pull the plug.... Harper had actually went on a spending spree of sorts, "on Paper" to entice back NFLD and Quebec for votes and weaken the LPC. Thinking that the NDP would support the budget, they believed the NDP wouldn't vote non confidence on the contempt motion.

The alternative was that the CPC could campaign on a pork budget if the government was defeated.

The government went down on contempt... because.. well because it was in contempt. You don't have to bring a government down over this... infact... for those who choose this motion, they merely figured the time was good... a bad decision in hindsight for the LPC.

While the Conservative supporters like to believe that the deficit is someone elses problem.. the fact is.. it is not.. it is the Conservative Government who blew the surplus early on and decided to cut taxes and increase spending....

You can look through these threads... back a few years... and you will see that it is many Western Conservatives that were questioning the fiscal abilities of Flaherty.

I think you are correct if we have to take a sample today.

I am waiting to see more of what Mulcair is doing.. I gotta say, he looks and sounds alot stronger and more confident then Harper watching the clips from yesterday.

I think this is Mulcairs to win or lose when it comes to a vision and direction.

We will have to wait and see.

He'd still form an NDP government.

Kenny and Raitt might be a B+ and a B- but their is an entire Cabinet to look at and its surprising how weak they perform.

Particular failures.. are TOEWS, ODA, McKay, Reise (SP) who would make Bernier look competent.

And Flaherty, I might move him from a D- to a C-

Bernier is fine. Peter Kent needs to be replaced by Michelle Rempel, Bev Oda should be replaced by Chris Alexander and John Duncan needs to go.

Thanks an interesting spin on the facts! I like your creative writing! Even tried and True died in the wool NDP'ers can admit to the Libs pulling this down and forcing an election! How do you "win an election and loose at the same time"?

Interesting, you are ok with Bernier...

I think Chris Alexander is there to stay. He was a lightening rod before he was elected, but I am not aware of incompetence.

I forgot about my favourite MP in Vaughn..... Julian Fantino... A very controversial and self absorbed dud.

I thought that was clear enough for you to know.. the Liberals Put forth the Motion pulling down the government... and they LOST the election.... of 2011, I think that is pretty clear to anyone.

I have no idea what you are speaking about regarding your last sentence?

Perhaps I have written something unclear in that post and if so point it out.... its possible, its early and its a long post.

If it is the run on sentence regarding the 2008 election...

Harper pulls plug for Majority, Doesn't get it, ends up with similar status quo...

that is how you win and lose and election. The purpose was to pull the plug on your own government to obtain a majority against a very weak weak liberal.

Otherwise its a waste of $300 million..

Hey Fletch, you can vote for whom you want, I just trying to understand why would someone vote for the Tories or should I say THIS Tory party, which really is alliance. Now, you say you wouldn't vote Liberals because of the Adscam, which a i agree and party that abuses taxpayers money shouldn't be in power, right?? So what would it take for you to vote against this Tory party?? You tell me how low a party has to be before you say no to them?

Posted

Till the party is proven guilty of stealing money... MASSIVE amounts as the Liberals.. Do i care is they are an alliance party formed in the West? Hell No!! I like what they stand for and i LOVE what steps they have taken on immigration (and im an immigrant btw) and other reform (long-gun etc.etc.etc)..

I understand that there will always be finger pointing by the opposition but Im intelligent enough to decipher facts from reality.. Bev Oda?? $2,000 dollars??? That she appologized for and repaid (even though it was deemed "appropriate" by the auditor but "in bad taste" even by me?).

There are things i DONT likeabout the current Tories... The Budget.. It did not cut enough and it cut in a number of wrong places... Maybe thats what makes me see things without blinders on... Im NOT stuck on one party but to date, Harper is getting the job done..

About as fair and clear and concise and answer as anyone could give. And I would agree.

Well yes ... if the Libs did it then it's ok for the Cons to 'scam money' too ... because the Cons aspire to be just as corrupt as the Libs!

Sure, vote for the Cons and watch them chase the Liberals

... to the bottom of the barrrel!

Ya, Harper's really getting the job done! :D

I'm no Liberal. :D

I'm more like a disaffected voter who still votes ... but NOT for either of the major corrupto-parties.

And the Cons didn't make any unintentional mistakes.

Doug Finley laid out the in-and-out scam in black and white.

They're trying to get away with as much corruption as the Liberals did.

But most Canadians have had their fill of the corruption ... except apparently some Con supporters who think it's the way to go. :o
