olpfan1 Posted March 5, 2012 Report Posted March 5, 2012 I can't imagine having to watch the olympics on the internet...I enjoy the internet but some things are just meant to be on tv..that would ruin the experience..I'd have to watch it on NBC? or another american network..I wanna watch it on cbc or ctv..this is really unfair http://www.theglobeandmail.com/report-on-business/lowball-olympic-bids-from-cbc-bce-open-door-for-yahoo/article2358280/ Competition to broadcast the Olympic Games in Canada is about to become an event of its own, with Yahoo Inc. (YHOO-Q14.72-0.21-1.41%) considering a bid to steal the Games from the country’s television powerhouses and push the coverage onto the Internet. Broadcast rights to the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia and the 2016 Summer Games in Brazil are up for grabs after the International Olympic Committee rejected two “lowball” bids by a Canadian Broadcasting Corp. and BCE Inc. (BCE-T40.670.060.15%) partnership. Their most recent bid was quietly rejected in late February, The Globe and Mail has learned. That has opened the door for Yahoo, which is now weighing using the Canadian broadcast rights as an opportunity to enhance its reputation as a content producer and revitalize its fortunes after losing ground to rivals such as Google Inc. (GOOG-Q621.25-1.15-0.18%) The Sunnyvale, Calif., company’s involvement could spark a bidding war for the rights, and also change the way Canadians watch one of the world’s most high-profile sporting events. Canadians have embraced online services such as those offered by Netflix (NFLX-Q115.102.352.08%), and by 2014 could be even more comfortable bypassing traditional broadcasters to watch the Olympic Games. Boges Posted March 5, 2012 Report Posted March 5, 2012 By 2014 I'd imagine content would be available through Media extenders like Xbox 360's if people wanted to watch Olympics on their TV. The Sochi Olympics is going to be a ratings dog for Canadian broadcasters. Absolutely the worst time zone for North America. You can watch Leaf games on Xbox Live when broadcast on Leafs TV right now. Quote
olpfan1 Posted March 5, 2012 Author Report Posted March 5, 2012 You can watch Leaf games on Xbox Live when broadcast on Leafs TV right now. I don't like xbox, I'm a nintendo fan (except not a fan of the wii) Quote
Boges Posted March 5, 2012 Report Posted March 5, 2012 I don't like xbox, I'm a nintendo fan (except not a fan of the wii) So what a 3DS? or do you still rock an N64? I'm sure the new Wii U that is supposed to come out later this year will be a fantastic Media Extender. Quote
Boges Posted March 5, 2012 Report Posted March 5, 2012 (edited) BTW you sort of buried the reason for the lowball bids olpfan. We don't know if NHL players will be at Sochi. If they aren't allowed, the biggest draw of the Winter Olympics will be drastically diminished. Edited March 5, 2012 by Boges Quote

I don't play much anymore, gave my 64 to my sisters boyfriend I have a gamecube but don't play it often, when I do I just screw around on Super Mario Sunshine Quote

Malkin & Ovechkin said they will be there no matter what I imagine they won't be the only ones As if Bettman is going to punish his top stars.. yeah right Quote
Boges Posted March 5, 2012 Report Posted March 5, 2012 I don't play much anymore, gave my 64 to my sisters boyfriend I have a gamecube but don't play it often, when I do I just screw around on Super Mario Sunshine The Gamecube is second to the Virtual Boy as the worst consoles Nintendo has produced. Point being that Media extenders are widely available. (Xbox, PS3, Apple TV, Blu-Ray players) That's how internet content providers will allow people to watch good quality stuff on their HDTVs. Yahoo actually has a decent National Sports Radio Station in the US as well. As for the NHL there are pros and cons for having Olympic players going. I won't be as interested in this Olympics if the games will be played at 4 am. Quote
fellowtraveller Posted March 5, 2012 Report Posted March 5, 2012 As if Bettman is going to punish his top stars.. yeah right Bettmans prime responsibility is to make money for the NHL franchise owners. The NHL shuts down and all the best players risk their careers and risk their teams revenue stream by playing- for nothing. There is no doubt the IOC profits mightily from NHL participation, it is not unreasonable that Bettman wonder why the players and NHL don't get any of that. It is a door the IOC does not want to open, but the monster behind it is their own creation. Quote The government should do something.

This is true but having the NHL players on the Olympic stage does good things for making Hockey a more popular sport. Now in Vancouver or Salt Lake City that's and easy benefit to illustrate, now in Buttfucknowhere ERRRR Sochi, Russia that's a harder claim to make. Quote
bush_cheney2004 Posted March 5, 2012 Report Posted March 5, 2012 This is true but having the NHL players on the Olympic stage does good things for making Hockey a more popular sport. I don't think hockey matters as much to a broader audience around the world. In the USA, NBC would move all but the most marquee games to another affiliated cable channel just for hockey die hards. I don't believe that hockey is a bigger draw for women in Canada compared to figure skating. Hockey games can be ponderous affairs compared to the faster television pace of other events and venue changes. Quote Economics trumps Virtue.

More popular, less popular- that is a sideshow for Bettman and the NHL. The IOC makes a lot of money off NHL players solely for the financial benefit of the IOC with considerable risk for the NHL. The Olympic tournament costs owners revenue because it interrupts the season and risks injury to players. Bettman wants the NHL to get some of the money earned off their backs, it is as simple as that. The NHL fiercely protects their brand, and so does the IOC. If the IOC wants hockey- and they certainly do because it is a winter marquee event- they are going to have to accomodate the NHL by paying. Quote The government should do something.
