Topaz Posted December 31, 2011 Report Posted December 31, 2011 In the city of London On., there could be a very heated strike coming in the New Year and the company Caterpillar had federal money, which Harper himself, three years ago went to London and boosted about the investment. Now, things are different and the company is threatening to cut wages and benefits in half and lock out the workers. More foreign companies are using this type of bargaining, when the contracts come up for renewal. The company is raking in billions and so we have another foreign company like Navistar who appears NOT to care about their workers. Not until we outsource our governance or perhaps insourcing is the way to go, read; by separating from Ottawa. It's clear that the rich, the right wing have declared war on the working class so then treat it as such...it's a war. scribblet Posted January 1, 2012 Report Posted January 1, 2012 (edited) When the company received the tax breaks it wasn't owned by Caterpillar, it was owned by Greenbriar Investments, who bought it from GM. If there was anything untoward with the sale and tax breaks, the time to look into that would've been at that time,I don't recall reading anything about it being a problem then. I don't recall the union complaining about the boost to the company either. So how is it Harper's fault that Greenbriar sold? I don't condone Caterpillar's too low wage offer, but can the Federal gov't stop Caterpillar legally and should they? Don't know but should the government have imposed binding arbitration on Air Canada's unions when they were in a legal position to strike?
