The_Squid Posted December 17, 2014 Report Posted December 17, 2014 In other words, No you dont but can make the case without knowing?I do wonder how that works. What the hell are you talking about? The entire committee is either Toronto or, in a single case, Montreal. Quote
Boges Posted December 17, 2014 Author Report Posted December 17, 2014 Yet last year they gave it to a guy playing in Calgary in the CFL. The other options was a girl from Quebec or a Lacrose player that sounds First Nations. I don't even know where in Canada Humphries is from and I don't think it matters. Canada's media is Toronto centric anyway. I don't see any evidence that it influences their decisions for this award. Quote
guyser Posted December 17, 2014 Report Posted December 17, 2014 Yet last year they gave it to a guy playing in Calgary in the CFL.Yup. A native New Westminster. Lets see, before that was Christine Sinclair a Burnaby girl. And now a Calgary girl. I don't even know where in Canada Humphries is from and I don't think it matters. You are right, it doesnt. Canada's media is Toronto centric anyway. I don't see any evidence that it influences their decisions for this award.Exactly Quote

Some are suggesting it isnt representative of the country, judging by the winners it sure looks so. So you think Toronto media have offices and work in Calgary? It is voted on by Toronto media, with a single exception. There is nothing national about the committee. I never claimed that the award goes to only Toronto athletes. It is not a national award, and has very little significance to a national audience. I googled who voted... couldn't find a list anywhere. Not even on the site for the award itself. Odd.... Quote
The_Squid Posted December 19, 2014 Report Posted December 19, 2014 1988 tells you all you need to know about the Lou Marsh trophy. A synchronized swimmer won the award. The_Squid Posted December 19, 2014 Report Posted December 19, 2014 Gretzky won it four times. The best anyone else has done is two, by another male hockey player. I know... however, then let's not be fooled into thinking that the award goes to the best Canadian athlete in a given year. Unless you can make an argument that the synchronized swimmer was better than Gretzky. Maybe the Lou Marsh committee can say the award goes "to a really good Canadian athlete unless they've already won it before.... plus we need to throw in some obscure sports occasionally.... and try and mix it up by gender as well...." guyser Posted December 19, 2014 Report Posted December 19, 2014 So you think Toronto media have offices and work in Calgary?Think? Nope, I know they do. Those broadcasts and liove shots are from employed folks stationed in Calgary Edmonton Calgary and Vancouver, for both TSN and SN. It is voted on by Toronto media, with a single exception. There is nothing national about the committee. I never claimed that the award goes to only Toronto athletes.Yes and No. The actual vote takes place in TO but some of those votes come from people who dont live here. As The Fan 590 guys said (Damien Cox) the voters reflect and recognize the entire country. And it would appear by whom they pick as winner as true It is not a national award, and has very little significance to a national audience.I have no idea how that can be your conclusion judging by the list of winners. I googled who voted... couldn't find a list anywhere. Not even on the site for the award itself. Odd....AFAIK its kept that way to mitigate any pressure to vote one way or the other. Quote

guyser Posted December 20, 2014 Report Posted December 20, 2014 What's the matter with Cornish winning? He has done things no Canadian has ever done in the CFL, more than once.Agreed. It would appear that if it isnt someones fav then the award is a waste of time, notreflective of all of Canada , a lousy sport and so on. Youre right, Cornish did what non had done before (CDN) and so did Humphries and so was the synchro award. Quote

Boges Posted December 23, 2014 Author Report Posted December 23, 2014 (edited) Bouchard won a major? I must have missed that one. But , hey if she did, then good on her and she should have won the LM award then. No. She made a Majors final and 3 majors semi and became the first Canadian Woman to rank in the Top 10 World Rankings. Dominating in Women's Bobsled is a lot less impressive than being a top 10 player in women's tennis. How many women even participate in Bobsled? Christine Sinclair didn't win anything either.
