Guest Derek L Posted October 19, 2011 Report Posted October 19, 2011 And you thought the f-35 was expensive A quick rundown for those not aware of the program……..Basically, the Government is choosing, with an announcement today, two out of three major shipyards across Canada (In Nova Scotia, Quebec and Vancouver) to build the next generation of ships for both the Navy and Coast Guard……..The contracts will be split between two yards, with one yard getting the larger contract to build the AOPS (Harper’s Slush breakers) then the replacement for our Navies destroyers and frigates….The second place winner gets the navies supply ships, the new artic ice breaker for the coast guard and smaller vessels……. With the announcement expected later today, I’ll predict Irving get’s the warships, and SEASPAN/Washington Marine group get’s the supply ships…………And Quebec is left with the NDP. Quote
Topaz Posted October 19, 2011 Report Posted October 19, 2011 Just a small question, where is the money coming from to pay for this? 35 Billion, and 9 billion for planes, 56 Billion deficit there's still the bridges, one in Windsor On and the one in Montreal plus all the interest. Quote
Smallc Posted October 19, 2011 Report Posted October 19, 2011 (edited) This money comes from the budget. The money for the bridge in Montreal doesn't, as it will be a toll bridge. The money for the Champlain bridge does. Governments have, do, and will spend money. They kind of have to. Oh, and just a point of contention - I don't really consider ships that can break 1M of ice continuously to be slush breakers. They aren't polar or heavy ice breakers mind you, but they'll still be able to operate for over half of the year. Personally though, I'd rather they would have skipped them, and used the money for 4 more polar ice breakers. That would have replaced most of the fleet of 6 medium and heavy breakers. At least two of those will need replacement not long after the Louis S. St. Laurent, so I'd expect them to be announced by 2015. Edited October 19, 2011 by Smallc Quote
Smallc Posted October 19, 2011 Report Posted October 19, 2011 (edited) Whichever yard wins, their fist work is pretty much ready to go. The arctic offshore patrol ships will start construction in July - August 2012, and the offshore oceanographic science vessel around the same time. The offshore fisheries science vessels should be ready to start not long after, and the JSS, within a year or so. I would expect the Canadian surface combatant to be ready for construction within 3 -4 years....which mean's the Iroquois Class will probably need another refit if they want to keep them in service until the new ships are built. Newfoundlander Posted October 19, 2011 Report Posted October 19, 2011 Now that I've heard there will be to much work for Halifax's shipyard and that Marystown will get work because of it I am fully behind Halifax winning! Quote
Smallc Posted October 19, 2011 Report Posted October 19, 2011 (edited) Halifax is holding press conference right after the announcement. Either they won, as most people predict, or they didn't win anything. The ministers and the shipyards were apparently informed this morning. Edited October 19, 2011 by Smallc Quote
The_Squid Posted October 19, 2011 Report Posted October 19, 2011 On the surface, it looks like the gov't took a hands-off approach and there isn't the political interference that usually accompanies these kind of large contracts. That's good. Hopefully it is true.... Quote

The_Squid Posted October 19, 2011 Report Posted October 19, 2011 It pretty much has to be true, given that the strategy was overseen by no less than 3 outside companies. I won't be drinking the Kool-aid quite as quickly. Who are these companies and do they have connections to the Harper gov't? This I do not know. Perhaps they don't, in which case the process seems to be a good one... Quote
Smallc Posted October 19, 2011 Report Posted October 19, 2011 (edited) KPMG, and a couple of European naval companies. Seriously, the people making the decisions didn't even know which companies bids they were looking at, and Cabinet, aside from approving the initial strategy, had no role in the selection. Edit: it was actually KPMG, Price Waterhouse Cooper, and a UK naval company. Edited October 19, 2011 by Smallc Quote
Smallc Posted October 19, 2011 Report Posted October 19, 2011 Halifax and Vancouver...I thought it would be Halifax and Levis...oh well. Quote
capricorn Posted October 19, 2011 Report Posted October 19, 2011 This is HUGE. Jobs, jobs, jobs for Nova Scotia and BC. Spinoffs by way of sub-contracts, spilling over to other provinces. A welcome boost to Canada's economy. I will eagerly monitor reaction from Quebec. Quote "We always want the best man to win an election. Unfortunately, he never runs." Will Rogers
punked Posted October 19, 2011 Report Posted October 19, 2011 I would say a victory for Darrel Dexter and the NDP for sure here. Quote

Rick Posted October 19, 2011 Report Posted October 19, 2011 I would say a victory for Darrel Dexter and the NDP for sure here. Yup.The Conservatives are clearly intent on pissing off Quebecers as much as possible. And Quebecers will remember it next time around when they vote NDP once again... Rick Posted October 19, 2011 Report Posted October 19, 2011 Excuse me, but, what in the world are you talking about? The Davie shipyard of Levis, Que. was the third contender for the contracts and was left on the outside. Since you must have missed that part Quote “This is all about who you represent,” Mr. Dewar (NDP) said. “We’re (NDP) talking about representing the interests of working people and everyday Canadians and they [the Conservatives] are about representing the fund managers who come in and fleece our companies and our country. Smallc Posted October 19, 2011 Report Posted October 19, 2011 Since you must have missed that part Did you not in any way pay attention to what was said at the news conference? Are you unable to comprehend basic language? On a less encouraging note, I give you this: http://news.nationalpost.com/2011/10/19/35b-tory-ship-project-hits-snag/ 2017 is already too late. capricorn Posted October 19, 2011 Report Posted October 19, 2011 The Conservatives are clearly intent on pissing off Quebecers as much as possible. Oh BS. === The NDP should soon provide some reaction (I would think) to this announcement. The central question they're furiously pondering is this: "how can we embarrass the Conservatives to satisfy our Quebec contingency without pissing off the ROC?". Should be fun to watch. Smallc Posted October 19, 2011 Report Posted October 19, 2011 The NDP did respond right after the announcement, and so far, they're happy. What I'd like to know is when the other ships, left out of the contracts will be announced. The other ice breakers, the offshore patrol vessels, and the coast guard tenders. Quote
