TimG Posted September 16, 2011 Report Posted September 16, 2011 (edited) Wrong, there are routers that have the ability to calculate traffic from different devices.Sure. But you have go out and buy a new router and configure the thing. This is a lot more than simplying downloading a free app to your cell phone. It's what I do for a living. That also explains why you have rediculous ideas on what is 'easy' for the average non-technical user. I could write my own program that collected those net statistics and emailed me alerts when I needed them. That does not mean I would expect a 65 year old to be able to do that. TimG Posted September 16, 2011 Report Posted September 16, 2011 (edited) Forgive Tim, hes not the most tech savvy dude. What an ignorant comment. Says a lot more about you than it does about me. Based on your posts I would say you are pretty clueless when it comes to technology and are really in no position to be judging others. Edited September 16, 2011 by TimG Quote
Boges Posted September 16, 2011 Report Posted September 16, 2011 Cogeco allows you to monitor usage on its website. I just got Netflix and have a 30 gb limit. So I'm definitely going to watch my web usage. BTW online gaming doesn't take very much bandwidth at all. Quote
GostHacked Posted September 16, 2011 Report Posted September 16, 2011 Sure. But you have go out and buy a new router and configure the thing. This is a lot more than simplying downloading a free app to your cell phone. My current router I've had for about a year. And some have had that ability for a few years. There are options. People just need to educate themselves on how to do it. That also explains why you have rediculous ideas on what is 'easy' for the average non-technical user. Computers are pretty easy, people approach them thinking they are very difficult, when today it's easier than ever. There is also always a manual with most hardware, software .. plus online help and well searching online also helps ... like people say RTFM. Quote

August1991 Posted September 16, 2011 Report Posted September 16, 2011 There is competition in ISPs. There is competition in cellular service. You can't say the market is not "open and fair" just because the market does not deliver the prices you think you should pay.But TimG, is there competition in wires into your home?Your home likely has 3 wires: hydro, cable and telephone. For major data transfer, that's it. You have access to several cell networks but they're slow (now). ----- Netflix, Videotron, Bell, Shaw, Primus, Rogers, Vonage, Skype... These are irrelevant choices. We have two critical wires into our homes: telephone and cable. Whether phone/Internet, we ultimately choose between the owners of these two wires. Call it a duopoly. GostHacked Posted September 16, 2011 Report Posted September 16, 2011 Mine doesn't and I have no interest in purchasing a new one to deal with a problem created by the ISPs. Depending on the model, it could be as easy as an update on the software side of things for the router. A firmware upgrade (usually a downloadable file, click, execute done) might also be a solution, since it is free. Your model may not support it, true. But there are other options. You have obviously never provided tech support to your older relatives and friends. Actually I have, and still do. Not to mention 5 years help desk for an isp, both residential and commercial, you just gotta know how to make analogies they can relate to. I do it all the time. Quote

dre Posted September 16, 2011 Report Posted September 16, 2011 It's what I do for a living. Yeah. Same here. Quote I question things because I am human. And call no one my father who's no closer than a stranger
