Based on my experience with cold beer and whine stores out here they will mark it up as much or more. At the very least it will be real close.

Indeed. The mark up that the LCBO charges is fairly normal for retail operations.

The bay buys something from a distributor, and marks it up 100%-200% or more.....that is how stores stay in business.

I think the only people that shop at the Bay are buying stuff for Wedding registries. The Bay is horribly overpriced.

There isn't a Bay in Milton, just a Zellers, which will soon be a Target. :D

Home Outfitters is a good store for small appliances and housewares. It's owned by HBC but it's prices are a bit more reasonable.

And appliances can have a 300-%500 mark up.

Luckily they should last for over a decade.

Maybe we should be raging at the price of anything in Canada. Which is why people go across one of the bridges over the Niagara river to shop for stuff in the US.

and again, which has nothing to do with the retail mark up...

Am I the only one suspicious of how this became an issue so close to the next provincial election? Why now?

I think that Dalton is so desperate that he's sending up trial balloons all over the place, looking for things that might bring him some votes.

I don't know if a Liberal gov't in Queens Park would actually change the laws to allow beer in variety stores but I could see them making a lot of implications during a campaign, without definitely making the promise, so that they could not later be held to it.

Well I know Dalton changed Liquor laws so when you go to events like Ribfests, you don't have to stay in a crowded beer tent like a child, you can actually walk around. Amongst other things.

The bitching about the price is my own doing, I think we pay way to much for booes, but I guess M Dancer is right, it's more about the ridiculous taxes charged.

I think we'll disagree on the fact that the province does set minimum prices for alcohol. So if other people were allowed sell booes like your local Mac's Milk, the price might drop.

The issue is the government has made selling tobacco so taboo, you're average corner store is really struggling and maybe allowing them to sell beer would help them out.

Well, Brewers retail has been annoying the independant breweries for quite a while...

http://www.thestar.com/business/companies/article/1030395--small-brewers-bitter-with-beer-store

The Beer Store is owned by Molson Coors (49 per cent), Labatt (49 per cent) and Sleeman (2 per cent). Labatt is a subsidiary of Anheuser-Busch/InBev, while Sleeman is owned by Japan’s Sapporo brewery.

This isn't new news...the struggle for the other brewers is to get good display space (when Moslon and Labatt's own the place, the first item you see are....

...and to get the fees to be reasonable. Can you imagine Harry Rosen charging Hugo Boss to sell their suits?

It won't drop below the legal minimum

Well perhaps if it WAS changed.

IM Future Premier Hudak.

Won't be. Not be a conservative or a liberal. The legal minimum is there as a measure to prevent binge drinking. And there are no political points to be made on that issue

Actually Tim Hudak has said that he would look at going back to buck-a-beer if he was elected.

It's beyond me how an extra few cents a beer would prevent binge drinking. If I wanted to get drunk fast, beer would not be my first choice.

Sure can. Not sure it happens there, but plenty of business' do exactly that.

Wal Mart, Loblaws. Metro , Shoppers Drug ad nauseum.

Ummmmm.....

Hudak would not commit to making cheaper beer part of the Tories' platform in the provincial election set for Oct. 6.

Loblaws wants money to put products on the shelves. One of the reasons it is so hard to break into the big stores.

They dont get it from everyone apparently (Loblaws Exec quoted) since consumers demand the latest hottest stuff.

Wal Mart is more of a dictator in that they tell you they will pay X and no more,

Shoppers et al all do it.

The grocery stores started the idea since the margin was so small .

The difference between smokes and booze is booze can affect other people instantly the drivers get behind the wheel and drives, smoking takes longer.

Until the stupid smoker drops a red-hot in their lap and loses control in their panicked frenzy to put it out.

Iam against this idea also,as I can see the selling of booze to underage kids if one place to sell it is the variety store.Just like it is with the selling cigarettes. More breakins to get the booze and I don't want to see it in the grocery stores, they are busy enough when you just want to get out there.

I'm a little sick of seeing the same government that busts people for unwinding with a toke at the end of the day selling you what it rather have you use to unwind with.

I'd rather see my friendly neighbourhood Hell's Angel Chapter given responsibility for selling booze to tell you the truth. It would probably be better quality than the crap the state sells.

And there it is....

I was wondering when the dope heads would chime in...

Its not just dopeheads that are sick of criminalizing weed. Its a majority of the population. Even if you think weed is a total blight on society the policy is an objective failure and collosal waste of money and time. I havent touched the stuff since my 20's and Im pissed that the government is sponsoring crime by funding organized criminals through prohibition.

I figured the subject matter offered the dope heads a "window of opportunity" to blither blather about legalization of weed...

I was right...

Are we talking decriminalization or legalization???
