Actually, I have some sympathy for that kind of "Pax Americana" approach. I've often felt that Canada has squandered its birthrite with so many leftwing ideas that annexation by Uncle Sam might be a positive solution. I'm not sure if Uncle Sam would want the bills for all the welfare cases but he could also benefit from access to northern resources, including fresh water.

I don't see that happening in the near or long term....Canada (and the US) already enjoy most of the advantages for markets and resources without the political disadvantages and challenges of complete integration. The discontinuities for criminal justice and jurisdiction are a natural occurrence...Mexico and the UN are pissed off because Texas just executed a convicted murderer but the US Supreme Court told them and Amnesty International to pound sand.

The only fly in the ointment is Obama. If he is indicative of the direction American is heading then what would be the point of merging the countries? Canada would be taking only a few reverse steps but keeping the same heading she's on anyways!

The feeling I get is that most Canadians just don't want to spend the money on prosecutions and incarcerations. In the US, we have cable television shows dedicated just to life in the slammer!

Throw away you mean, not spend.

The feeling I get is that you folks in the US are too dedicated to authority.

Whatever....a guy like Robert Pickton doesn't get any more trials, denying victims their "justice"....saving millions! He can parole in 25 years...saving even more money for free injection sites!

Over criminals...you bet. Old Testament all the way....most Canadians prefer to just hug-a-thug and save some cash.

As for what Willian Ashley wrote...I agree with most - firstly when looking at his famous Canadian lawyers face when the conviction was laid down...I could clearly see that the lawyer had betrayed him and the trusting Mr. Black was not that good at reading people.

To reveal a bit of my distant past..might be useful to people like Bush Cheney..who do not understand this "class" - When I was very young I co-habitated with the daughter of the man who was Conrads original boss and how in part trained him. I have never met Mr. Black but I have met many of those that were his friends and accociates. Black was always a mishievous kid...yes he cheated on his exams and sold stolen exam answers while a kid at UCC...BUT - Myself as just some Russian immigrants son from the wrong side of the tracks...observed these people for almost 5 years - They are strick - they attempt to be as honourable as humanly possible - they are very controlling - and they are what built this nation and why are banks are stable.

After not communicating with this sect for 25 years I renewed a relationship with my firsts loves oldest brother who is a lawyer...I said to him "how could you guys do this to Conrad?" In reference to turning their backs on him and laying low..what I understood if Conrad was caught...for being corrupt - Then what of his twenty high ranking Canadian buddies that he has known all of his life - all of them are silent...makes you wonder if Conrad is not the norm within the American and Canadian buisness community - rather than the exception...I would safely asssume he is the norm...and a common fall guy - I feel sorry for him and wish him the best - Those damned Americans are feared by the Canadian elite...

eg...My friend Al started a small company that sold cheap Canadian pharma to old ladies in America --- "The AMERICANS ARE NOT GOING TO LIKE THAT" is all I heard from my now distant and disconnected lawyer friend...Canada is afraid of American reprisals ... to kid nap Conrad Black and keep him was a common show of force NOTHING ELSE.

Black rejected your country for ego and position...so much for that. He's just another common criminal in the tradition of Enron and MCI WorldCom. Manuel Noriega put up a better fight but still went down in the end.

We all make mistakes through mindless arrogance - Like a son who figures he does not need his father anymore and tells him to f off - that he is a man now...when the father will aways be the head till he's dead....then the kid can have the big chair..

BC - interanationally and domestically - your nation and mine have slowly and very incrimentally been taken over by crimminals or their highly motivated and privledged off spring - The world is run by them now ----so - If I have to be a bit mercenary - I am with the side that is winnng - much like my father who wore more than one uniform.

Speak for yourself....my country was founded by getting rid of the royal Black types and setting up our own brand of "criminal" corporatism. The game has rules...or hell, anybody could do it.

Lord Black is/was exactly the kind of royal scumbag we love to see imprisoned with other criminals. His fall from such lofty grace is the stuff of Hollywood comedies. Even the judge laughed at his arrogant stupidity. And then Lord (Candy Ass) Black whines about it.

Black makes very coherent arguments about the unreasonableness and self-serving incompetence of America's judicial system.

The "unreasonableness" and "self-serving incompetence" are no doubt real enough. But by relative terms, it's in the top echelons of justice systems globally.

Now, I understand, and sympathize with, the idea that such a reply is insufficient; that "others are worse" is usually a poor argument.

However, I get the impression that there is an implied comparison between Canada's and America's justice systems, with His poor little victimized Lordship's awful travails implying the superiority of the Northern brand.

And that don't wash.

The total amount of 'fraud' he eventually wound up being convicted of, even by odd American rules, was something like $600k, I believe.

Much smaller criminals, without means and titles, often get harsher treatment for less.
